UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — A UN peacekeeper camp in eastern Mali was hit by mortar fire, the UN mission in the country (MINUSMA) said in a statement on Friday.

"This morning around 6:10 a.m. [6:10 GMT], the MINUSMA camp was targeted by mortar fire. According to preliminary reports, at least four mortars hit near the camp. The attack did not cause any victims or damage," the statement reads.

Following the attack, peacekeeping forces reinforced camp security, sent patrols to locate the source of the fire and ensured civilian security.

Head of MINUSMA Mongi Hamdi condemned the attack, urging the peacekeepers to maintain their support for Mali and its people.

Over the past year, the number of assaults, including rocket attacks, suicide bombings and land mines causing injuries and casualties among the UN peacekeepers in Mali has soared dramatically, according to the US State Department.

Mali has been in turmoil since a 2012 military coup. A UN Mission has been present in the African country since 2013.
