Powerful explosions and heavy gunfire were heard in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Suicide car bombers rammed into two hotels named Wehliya and Siyaad before gunmen stormed in and opened fire, according to a local police officer Nur Ali.

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attacks.

"So far we understand they killed four people inside the hotel," Nur Ali said.

Initial reports claim that both hotels popular with top government officials and at least 3 MPs were injured in the attack.

Police also stated that the gunmen are still alive and fighting is continuing in both hotels.

National Intelligence and Security Agency of Somalia claims the situation has been brought under controll.

Despite security measures being intensified for Ramadan, bombings in Mogadishu have been taking place almost daily.

On Sunday a local intelligence officer was killed by an explosion in his car while driving to work. At least six people were killed in a grenade attack in the Somali capital on Monday, while on Tuesday two civilians were killed in a car bomb blast in the city.

There are reports of a series of assassinations conducted recently against senior security officers and the country’s officials, allegedly carried out by al-Shabaab terrorists.
