MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A general election is being held on Monday in the southeastern African country of Burundi amid months-long violent protests, Al Jazeera broadcaster reported.

Earlier in the day, polling stations opened in the country, despite a refusal by the African Union to observe the elections over a lack of dialogue about compromise in the Burundi crisis.

About 3.8 million Burundians are eligible to vote in the parliamentary election, according to the broadcaster.

Last week, the country’s opposition parties and civil society groups announced that they would boycott the vote, as well as a July 15 presidential election.

In April, Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would run for a third presidential term in the upcoming election, triggering violent unrest and refugee flight in the country’s capital Bujumbura.

At least 105,000 people have fled Burundi to escape violence since the beginning of protests, according to UN data.
