MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Police have detained at least 100 people during mass protests in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, which followed the execution of Ethiopian Christians in Libya by the Islamic State (ISIL) extremists, the Al Jazeera TV channel reports.
Police also used tear gas against some of the protesters, who started to attack law enforcement officers, throwing stones and claiming that Ethiopia's government is incapable of protecting its citizens, Al Jazeera said on Thursday.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), has ceased vast areas in Iraq and Syria, proclaiming the establishment of an Islamic caliphate on the territories under its control and forcing thousands of people, particularly religious minorities, to flee.
The extremists have also been active in Libya, along with other jihadist groups that have been operating in the country amid enduring internal instability sparked by the 2011 overthrow of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.
ISIL affiliates have also launched several terror attacks in Europe, and have become notorious for their kidnappings and public beheadings of European journalists.
