Several people have been wounded by gunfire after clashes broke out at a march organized by those opposing the government in several neighborhoods of the Guinean capital, Conakry.
According to hospital staff reports, security forces shot three protestors in the area of Hamdallaye, and in the Simbaya suburb four demonstrators were shot. Reports from government sources said that one police officer had been injured by protestors throwing stones.
Guinea's political opposition began a boycott of parliament in March, in protest of the government's announcement that the next presidential election will be held on October 11, before communal elections take place rather than afterwards. On April 11, opposition groups announced that protests would be held on April 13-16 in order to halt the current election timetable.
