At least one student has died and more than 200 have been hurt in a stampede after an electricity transformer exploded in Kenya's University of Nairobi campus.

A stampede in Kenya's University of Nairobi campus has killed at least one student and injured 200 more; the tragedy was reportedly caused by an explosion of an electricity transformer, news reports said.

Last week, Somalia's Al-Shabaab Islamist militants broke into a university in eastern Kenya, killing 148 people.

It was reported that the students mistook accidental transformer explosions for an al-Shabaab terrorist attack, with some of them jumping the sixth floor of their residence.
