BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Tunisia may become the next state targeted by the Islamic State (ISIL) jihadist group, European Council President Donald Tusk said on Friday.

He stressed that the threat is obvious and Tunisia should be "under the European Union’s special protection."

Over 20 people died and more than 40 were injured during Wednesday’s attack at the Bardo museum in Tunisia's capital city. Unidentified gunmen opened fire in the presence of up to 200 visitors.

Citizens of several EU states, along with Colombians, Japanese, Australians and Russians were among the victims.

The ISIL group claimed responsibility for the attack. Islamic State militants and groups that have pledged their allegiance to the extremists currently operate in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Nigeria.
