Russia Condemns 'Barbaric' Terrorist Attack in Tunisia

A total of 200 people were in the Bardo Museum at the time of the attack. Tourists from Spain, France, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom were among those held hostage.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia strongly condemns the "barbaric act of terror" in the Tunisian capital on Wednesday that killed 22 people, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The local Mosaique FM Radio citing a source in a hospital reported earlier in the day that the death toll from the deadly attack by two gunmen on the Bardo Museum in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, rose from 19 to 22 people, with another 50 injured.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the relatives of the deceased, and confirm our firm solidarity with the Tunisian authorities in their efforts to combat the threat of terrorism," the ministry said in statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also confirmed that there were no Russian nationals among the Bardo hostages.

According to Mosaique FM Radio, a total of 200 people were in the museum at the time of the attack. Tourists from Spain, France, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom were among those held hostage.

Both gunmen were killed in a firefight with security forces.

Earlier on Wednesday, the authorities of Italy, Spain, Poland and the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini also condemned the attack in Tunis. Mogherini stated that ISIL militants were to blame for the tragedy.
