Boko Haram militants attacked a border town in Cameroon, Fotokol, killing dozens of civilians and soldiers Wednesday. A mosque was destroyed during the onslaught.
"They burnt houses and killed civilians as well as soldiers," a source told Agence France-Presse. According to local residents, the throats of civilians were "slit".
Regional security forces have reportedly repelled the attack.
Boko Haram, or “Western education is forbidden,” has been advocating Islamic fundamentalism in northeastern Nigeria since 2002. The group, seeking to establish an Islamic caliphate, began launching attacks in 2009 and has since seized large parts of Nigeria, with violence spilling over to neighboring countries.
