Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine in February, after Ukraine increased attacks against the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
Russian armed forces have been targeting Ukraine's military and energy infrastructure in high-precision strikes since October 10 in response to Ukraine's terrorist attack on Russia's Crimean Bridge.
The strikes are carried out on power, defense industry, military command and communications facilities across Ukraine. Since then, air raid alerts have been issued in Ukrainian regions almost every day, sometimes throughout the country.

Russian, Western Diplomats at UN Wish for Peace - Polyanskiy
Russian and Western representatives at the United Nations wish peace to each other on New Year’s Eve, Dmitry Polyanskiy, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, said.
"Everyone wishes each other peace. Everyone wishes for a peaceful year. For the world to return to some kind of trajectory of sustainable development and cooperation. This is what’s being wished to us, and we also wish that, including to our Western colleagues here, with whom we have normal relations," Polyanskiy said on the Russian Soloviev Live show.
He added that Western diplomats understand that they have gone too far and that the world is at a very "dangerous stage" right now, without there being any clarity as to how to achieve a peaceful state of affairs, considering that Western countries have "burnt all the bridges."
Since the beginning of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in February 2022 and the adoption of several packages of sanctions against Moscow by Western countries, Russia has shifted its focus and has intensified its multifaceted cooperation with countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Backup Power Line to Zaporozhye NPP Disconnected Due to Shelling - IAEA
The backup power line to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP) was disconnected last night due to damage caused by shelling, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on Friday.

"A 330 kilovolt (kV) back-up power line to Ukraine’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was disconnected late yesterday due to damage caused by shelling, in the latest incident underlining the facility’s fragile supplies of electricity from the grid," Grossi said.

According to the agency, the ZNPP continues to receive off-site electricity needed to cool the reactors and maintain other important nuclear safety functions via a single external 750 kV power line.

The extent of damage to the backup line is not yet clear, work is underway to repair it, the IAEA experts at the site said.

Ukrainian S-300 Missile Unlikely to Have Fallen in Belarus by Accident - Minsk
State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Alexander Volfovich told Sputnik on Friday that a Ukrainian S-300 missile was unlikely to have fallen on Belarusian territory by accident and that the incident might be part of someone's plan.

"Kiev seeks to provoke a regional conflict by any means. It is not enough for Ukraine to have a war on its own territory. An example of this is the recent incident with the destruction of a Ukrainian S-300 missile. We will establish the reason for its fall on our territory, but the probability that it flew to us by accident is very low. Apparently, someone's plan is being realized here," Volfovich said.

He added that Warsaw demonstrated reluctance to discuss regional security issues related to the fall of the Ukrainian missile in Belarus.

Over 3,000 Killed Civilians Found in Mariupol - Russian Investigative Committee
Russia has found more than 3,000 killed civilians in Mariupol after taking control over the city, the Russian Investigative Committee told Sputnik.

"In April alone, the bodies of 51 civilians were found at the positions abandoned by the Ukrainian troops, and after the complete liberation and examination of the city, their number amounted to over 3,000," the committee said.

The investigators added that the Ukrainian military "artificially created obstacles for evacuation [of citizens] from the city" after the Russian armed forces had organized humanitarian corridors.

"Unable to leave the city and moving in search of food, civilians became a living target for Ukrainian punishers who killed them with various types of weapons," the Russian Investigative Committee told Sputnik.

The Russian investigators proposed the creation of a special DNA database of those killed, citing difficulties in identifying the victims.

Kiev Sends Foreign Fighters to Bakhmut, Soledar Areas - LPR Forces
Kiev sent additional detachments of foreign fighters to the areas of the cities of Bakhmut, also known as Artemivsk, and Soledar to contain the advance of Russian forces, Andrei Marochko, an officer of the Lugansk People’s Republic forces told Sputnik on Friday.

"In opposition to our advancing battle formations, the Ukrainian command additionally sent rapid reaction detachments consisting exclusively of foreigners to the area of Artemevsk and Soledar," Marochko said.

He said that the detachments were mobile groups equipped with NATO countries’ weapons. They use Hummer armored vehicles and the coordination of groups with the Ukrainian command is carried out by translators.

"Each group has an interpreter, as the militants do not know Russian and communicate with each other mostly in English," Marochko added.
On Thursday, Oleksiy Arestovich, an adviser to the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office, said that Ukrainian forces were suffering serious losses in the Bakhmut and Soledar areas.

Bakhmut is located in the Kiev-controlled part of the Donetsk People's Republic, which was incorporated into Russia this fall after a referendum, and is an important transport hub for supplying the Ukrainian troops in Donbass amid the military operation launched by Russia in Ukraine in February.
