The main topics of the NATO summit starting on Tuesday evening in Madrid will be the strengthening of collective defense and deterrence, as well as the continuation of assistance to Ukraine, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday.

The 2022 NATO Summit is taking place in the Spanish city of Madrid from June 28-30.

Heads of State and Government from NATO's member countries, along with key partners are expected to adopt a new Strategic Concept outlining the alliance's core security policies and challenges for the next decade.

The NATO summit in Madrid will end on June 30. The main discussions of the leaders of the bloc countries are scheduled for Wednesday, June 29.

"Later, the President will meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey to discuss the Alliance’s collective defense and security and a range of issues important to the bilateral relationship," the White House said on Tuesday.

China 'Deeply Concerned' About New NATO Strategic Concept - Envoy to UN

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - China is very concerned about NATO's new strategic concept and urges the alliance to reconsider its posture, the Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Zhang Jun said during a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine.

"China pays close attention to NATO's strategic adjustment and is deeply concerned about the policy implications of the so-called strategic concept," Zhang said on Tuesday.

China also urges NATO not to create a new Cold War nor create a scapegoat out of Ukraine for its actions in that country.

"We urge NATO to learn its lessons and not to use this crisis in Ukraine as an excuse to stoke worldwide block confrontation or a new Cold War," Zhang said.

China has argued for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine and supports negotiations between Kiev and Moscow.

"Congratulations to Finland, Sweden, and Turkey on signing a trilateral memorandum - a crucial step towards a NATO invite to Finland and Sweden, which will strengthen our Alliance and bolster our collective security - and a great way to begin the Summit," Biden said in a tweet.

Sweden, Finland Will Cooperate With Turkey on Countrering Terrorism, Agreement is Reached, Erdogan's Office Says

Sweden and Finland will cooperate with Ankara on countering terrorism and agreed not to support the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Fethullah Gulen Organization (FETO), the office of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

"[They] committed to full cooperation with Turkey in the fight against the PKK and its affiliates, in solidarity with Turkey in the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and not to support the PKK / YPG and FETO," the office said.

According to Ankara, Finland and Sweden also agreed to abandon "the embargo in the field of the military-industrial complex" of Turkey.

Finland and Sweden also agreed to amend their national legislation "in the field of counter-terrorism and the defense industry," Erdogan’s office said.

Turkey Will Support Finland's, Sweden's Bid to Join NATO During Madrid Summit, Helsinki Says

Turkey will support Finnish and Swedish NATO membership applications during the ongoing summit of the alliance in Madrid, the office of Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Niinsto met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson in Madrid.

"As a result of this meeting, the foreign ministers of our countries signed a trilateral memorandum, which confirms that Turkey will support the invitation of Finland and Sweden to become NATO members at the Madrid summit this week. Concrete steps for our entry into NATO will be agreed by NATO Allies over the next two days, but now this decision is inevitable," the office said in a statement.

Niinisto also said that he is happy to complete "the Turkish step" on Finland’s way to becoming a NATO member.

"Our joint memorandum underlines the commitment of Finland, Sweden and Turkey to provide full support in combating threats to each other's security. Us becoming NATO allies will further strengthen this commitment," the office said.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce additional financing of the defense sector at the NATO summit in Madrid, following pressure from ministers, The Times reported on Tuesday.

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has reportedly sent a letter to Johnson with calls to increase the UK’s armed forces budget to 2.5% of GDP, which would equal 10 billion pounds ($12.2 billion) a year, against the backdrop of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.

According to the media, Johnson has been preparing for a rise in defense spending and is expected to announce this decision at a NATO summit in Spain.

Turkey's Erdogan Plans to Meet With Biden in Madrid

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after a phone conversation with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, that they planned to meet in-person in Madrid later on Tuesday or Wednesday.

"I had a conversation with Biden this morning. We may hold a meeting in Madrid this evening or tomorrow," Erdogan told reporters before departing to Spain for a NATO summit.

The White House later confirmed that the presidents had agreed to meet on the sidelines of the NATO summit to discuss the conflict in Ukraine, as well as terrorism and the alliance's collective security.

"President Biden noted he looks forward to seeing President Erdogan at the NATO Summit in Madrid where leaders will discuss the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for Transatlantic security and other threats to the Alliance," it said.

Erdogan said that deliveries of F-16 fighters to Turkey were "still on the table." Turkey made a request to buy US-made jets after Washington kicked Ankara out of the advanced F-35 joint production program to punish it for buying Russian S-400 air defense missile systems.

NATO is set to label China as a “systemic challenge” when outlining this week its new policy guidelines, Bloomberg reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

The North Atlantic alliance will also highlight China's deepening partnership with Russia, the report said.

It said the so-called Strategic Concept will outline NATO's priorities for the coming decade, and is to be signed by NATO leaders at the Madrid summit this week. The previous 2010 version did not mention China and called Russia a partner, which is set to be changed.
