Russia launched its special operation in Ukraine on February 24, after the Donbass republics asked Moscow for assistance amid attacks perpetrated by Ukrainian troops. President Putin stressed that the op was launched to end the eight-year war waged by Kiev against Donetsk and Lugansk.
Russian and Donbass troops are advancing amid the special operation, as they have liberated multiple cities in the DPR and LPR over the past weeks. However, Kiev's forces are still targeting Donetsk and other Donbass cities with their artillery, carrying out intense attacks and causing civilian casualties.

US Raised Tariffs on 75% of Imports From Russia After Suspending Normal Trade Ties
The suspension of normal trade ties with Russia allowed the United States to increase tariff rates on more than 75% of its imports from Russia, Trade Representative Katherine Tai said on Wednesday.
"As a result of the bill that Congress passed and that the president signed into law earlier this spring, the United States has with respect to trade suspended permanent normal trade relations with Russia. And that means we've imposed non-MFN [most favored nation] tariffs on imports from Russia. That action alone has increased tariff rates on over 75% of US imports from Russia," she said.

US Did Not Let Russia to Take Out Foreign Institutions' Employees
The United States did not allow the arrival of a special flight of Russian state aviation to evacuate employees of Russian foreign institutions and members of their families, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The US side continues to systematically destroy bilateral relations, which are already in a deplorable state. Washington marked another hostile step towards our country by not issuing permission for the arrival of a special flight of Russian state aviation to the United States, which was supposed to take employees of Russian foreign agencies and members of their families," the ministry said in a statement.
The Biden administration chose to completely ignore the fact that, in essence, it was a humanitarian action, since Russia's plane was supposed to take out people, who were previously ordered by the State Department to leave the United States by the end of this month, it added.
"Such defiant behavior by the US authorities will not go unanswered. As we previously warned, in case of refusal to admit the Russian special aircraft, countermeasures will inevitably follow, including of an asymmetric nature, which we will communicate in due course through diplomatic channels," the ministry said.

US Supports UN Efforts to Re-Open Odessa Port for Food Exports
The United States supports the United Nations efforts to re-open the ports within the city of Odessa for export of food and other products, US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, Ramin Toloui said on Wednesday.
“The United Nations... is working very hard to find an accommodation that will allow one of these ports to re-open, or several ports within Odessa. We in the US government are fully supportive of that,” Toloui said during a telephonic press briefing.
Toloui said the United States wants to see grain and other products coming out of those ports be able to get to markets worldwide, particularly in the Middle East in Africa.
“We will continue to have close coordination with the UN delegation and the government of Ukraine on way to mitigate the impacts on global food security of Russia’s war,” he said.
Toloui accused Russia of allegedly weaponizing food, but acknowledged that the current food crisis began well before Russia launched its special military operation and Ukraine, saying the coronavirus pandemic and climate change were some of the causes.
Russia has repeatedly said that it does not hinder the export of Ukrainian grain and has secured not one but two sea corridors for such exports, noting that Ukraine had heavily mined the Black Sea.

EU Fears Ukrainian Conflict May Trigger New Migration Waves From Africa - Reports
The European Union fears that the conflict in Ukraine could lead to catastrophic famine in Africa, which would cause new waves of protests, internal displacement and migration, including toward Europe, El Pais newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing a joint report of the European Commission and the European External Action Service.
The report, which has not been made public, was sent to all EU members earlier in week, the newspaper said. It outlines ways to respond to the consequences of the Ukrainian crisis, covering the territory from the Balkans and Turkey to Latin America. These regions are feeling the effects of a new geopolitical situation marked by high instability and growing risks of fragmentation of the international community, El Pais noted. Spain and Italy may be on the path of the new migration wave across the Mediterranean Sea, the newspaper added.
The European Commission intends to focus on assisting countries most affected by the crisis, those seeking to join the EU, the most influential players in each region or those needed to import energy and raw materials, the report said. The EU has already begun to provide urgent support to a number of countries, allocating more than $236 million to Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, Tunisia, Morocco and Palestine through the so-called Food and Resilience Fund, it added.
The latest data presented in the report shows that already some 193 million people, 40 million more than last year, "are subject to severe food shortages and need urgent assistance." An extension of the conflict in Ukraine could also destabilize Latin America and the Caribbean, El Pais said.

"Higher energy and food prices will increase poverty, hunger and social tensions in a context of growing inequality, political polarization and distrust of governments," the report read, as quoted by El Pais.
