MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have denied reports about the escape of Daesh* militants from prison in the Syrian city of Raqqa.
Earlier in the day, Syrian newspaper Al-Watan reported, citing local sources, that more than 30 Daesh militants have escaped from the SDF-controlled prison in Raqqa.
"Some Media outlets have published fake news about insurgence and escaping of a number of ISIS prisoners from the Raqqa Central Prison. We confirm that there are no such things, and the sweep operations are part of the regular and precautionary security measures on the perimeter of the prison," the SDF said in a statement.
In January, Daesh terrorists organised an attack on the SDF-controlled al-Sinaa prison in Al Hasakah in an attempt to free imprisoned militants. Six days later, the SDF command said the prison had been taken under full control and the remaining terrorists, numbering about 1,000, had surrendered. At the same time, it was reported that about 200 militants were able to escape and fled to the settlements adjacent to Al Hasakah.
*Daesh (also known as ISIS/ISIL/IS) is a terrorist group banned in Russia.
