Joe Biden claims to have never discussed foreign business affairs with Hunter, but emails extracted from a laptop presumably belonging to the president's son suggest otherwise. A congressional investigation into the matter has been proposed.
Republican House lawmaker James Comer has announced plans to launch a probe into the scandals surrounding Hunter Biden in order to determine whether his father, President Joe Biden, knew about his reportedly shady schemes.
Comer looks to get to the bottom of the matter if Republicans win back control of the House and he becomes the head of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Preliminary polls currently place the GOP in pol position to seize back control over the House in November’s midterms. Biden’s approval rating has dropped recently due to raging inflation and other issues.
The Republican lawmaker went on to argue that US people increasingly realise that the scandals surrounding the president's son are not "conspiracy theories", and now demand answers on whether the Democrat administration is worthy of their trust.
He hopes that the GOP probe into Hunter Biden, his business partners and his father will shed light on these matters, but admitted that he does not expect much cooperation from the White House.
"[US citizens] are starting to realize that Joe Biden had a lot more knowledge and interaction with Hunter and his business partners. Not only do they question the effectiveness of his policies, now they're questioning his ethics and his truthfulness", Comer said.
The House Republican went on to assert that even the Democratic Party itself considers Hunter Biden and his scandals an issue that might spoil their results in this year’s midterms. Comer admits to being more concerned with the fact that Hunter was a "grafter", who profited from his father's name and who might be a "national security risk".
"The more that we piece together the more it shows that there is a pattern. This is the Biden crime family. Hunter's dealings are always with countries that don't like us and with energy and interests that would be counter to American interests […] Is Joe Biden compromised by Ukrainian energy or Russian oligarchs or Communist China? These are legitimate questions", he asked.
Comer also commented that he plans to invite not only Hunter Biden himself to answer to the committee, but also his former business partners, such as Eric Scherwin. The lawmaker namely wants to question the latter about his frequent visits to the White House when Joe Biden was vice president.
According to one of the emails from a laptop believed to have belonged to Hunter Biden, the president’s son once organised a meeting between his father and a colleague on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Joe Biden has insisted that he never discussed his foreign business affairs with his son, but findings from the laptop suggest otherwise.
