Will Smith definitely stole this year's Oscars show after ascending to the stage to slap comedian Chris Rock, who was hosting the ceremony. But he also secured his own Academy Award some time before the assault, even though this accomplishment was inevitably mired.
Actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who hosted this weekend's Saturday Night Live show, reflected on how Chris Rock was not the only one who got beaten by Will Smith at Oscars 2022.
Cumberbatch was nominated for the Academy Award this year in the Best Actor category for his performance in 'Power of the Dog'. However, the Oscar went to Will Smith - who, however, was not necessarily remembered exclusively for his award that night.
"I didn't win. I was beat by Will Smith... not physically! Not physically," Cumberbatch joked.
Smith was invited back on stage to collect his Oscar just half an hour after he slapped Chris Rock following the latter's joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair condition.
He repeatedly apologised for assaulting Rock, but still had to resign from the Academy in the wake of the slap, with it also banning Smith from its events for 19 years. Rock, in his turn, decided not to press charges against the actor.
