The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Moscow and Bucharest, after Romania announced the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats earlier this week.
The Russian diplomatic mission in Romania on Wednesday confirmed that a car crashed into the gates of the facility, noting that the driver was deliberately trying to ram the entrance. The embassy stressed that the attempt was a result of the anti-Russian hysteria, triggered by the provocation of Ukrainian forces in Bucha near Kiev.

"What occurred this morning was basically a terrorist attack, although there are many circumstances that make this incident more difficult to understand", Russian Ambassador Valery Kuzmin stated.

The diplomat said that the driver loaded several canisters of fuel into the car, and set it on fire when the police tried to get him out of the vehicle.
The incident occurred in Bucharest early Wednesday.

"This morning, around 6:00, an incident involving a car was reported, as it left the road and hit the fence of a diplomatic mission. The driver died and firefighters had to intervene in order to extinguish the blaze", police said in a statement.

Later in the day, the police confirmed it was a deliberate act, adding that the man set himself on fire.
Several photos and videos are circulating online purportedly showing the aftermath of the collision, with a car engulfed in flames.
The Romanian website Antena 3 said in a report that the name of the man was Bogdan Draghici, suggesting he sprayed himself with gasoline and set himself on fire. Draghici was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison for abusing his stepdaughter and was under judicial supervision as he was being investigated in connection with sex crimes.
The head of the Russian Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, has ordered a probe into the incident.
Romanian authorities have not yet elaborated on whether they consider it an attempt to attack the embassy or simply a fatal accident.
