A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan at 17:46 local time on Monday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported.
Earlier, the centre measured the quake at 6.0 on the Richter scale.
According to EMSC, the epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 20 km, 64 km to the east of Hualien City, Taiwan, which has a population of 350,000.
The shaking was reportedly felt in the capital Taipei.
"The shaking lasted for a good 20 seconds with the ground moving left and right," an AFP reporter said.
Office workers in Taipei shared a video showing lamps and computer screens shaking.
Another footage shows traffic lights moving from side to side in the street.
No injuries or damage have been reported so far.
Taiwan is often hit by quakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.
