Local residents have felt strong tremors that swayed walls and cause items to fall on the floor.
An earthquake of 6.2 magnitude hit the coastal area of northern California, US on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Tremors were recorded at 20:10 UTC, 38 kilometers west of Petrolia.
The earthquake was largely felt around Humboldt County. It has caused minor damage to the affected area, and there is still a likelihood of further damage. There was also no tsunami warnings.
Users on Twitter said that the earthquake was a "big one." It was said to cause electricity disruptions and cause items to fall on the floor.
