Thousands of fans flocked to the NRG Park complex in Houston, Texas, on Friday for rapper Travis Scott’s Astroworld music festival.
At least eight people have died and "scores" have been injured at the Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas, local authorities have announced. The confirmation of the deaths comes shortly after social media sites were flooded with disturbing messages and videos from the music festival, where people were seen dancing next to unconscious people lying on the ground.
Houston Fire Department Sam Pena confirmed that a number of attendees suffered from heart attacks.
"At around 9 or 9:15, the crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage and that caused panic and people were getting injured. HFD transported 17 people to hospitals. 11 of those transported were in cardiac arrest."
According to authorities, a crowd at the festival compressed toward the stage and caused a panic.
Social media users have been sharing extremely graphic videos of medics performing CPR unconscious young people at Travis Scott's annual music festival.
Multiple ambulances were seen at the sold-out concert, with the Houston Fire Department telling ABC 13 that CPR was performed on at least two people.
Authorities told FOX 26 that the incident has been classified as "level 2" due to the number of calls they're receiving from distraught festival-goers.

It's unclear if Travis Scott is aware of what happened at the venue, but the Houston Chronicle reported that the rapper stopped his set several times to ask security to help the fans get out of the crowd. He hasn't issued a statement yet.

The reported tragedy comes just hours after a stampede at the entrance to NRG Park, where large crowds had gathered to attend the event. Multiple fans were trampled as people rushed to get inside the complex. Once inside, many people began climbing onto portable toilets, while security personnel tried to contain the crowd.

The second day of the music event, which kicked off on Friday, has been cancelled.

Astroworld Festival is an annual music event run by American rapper Travis Scott.
The festival was cancelled last year due to the raging pandemic. Back in May, 100,000 tickets sold out within an hour of going on sale, according to ABC 13.
