The global coronavirus tally has now exceeded 225.7 million, and at least 4.64 million people have died because of the disease, according to Johns Hopkins University, which tracks data on the pandemic.

The US, India, and Brazil are still the nations most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The United States has confirmed more than 41.3 million infections and 663,923 deaths.

India has registered 33.32 million coronavirus cases and 443,497 fatalities.

Brazil has logged almost 21 million infections and the second-highest death toll in the world - more than 587,797.

Number of COVID-19 Cases in Brazil Rises by 14,780 to Over 21.03Mln – Ministry of Health

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil has increased by 14,780 to 21,034,610 within the past 24 hours, the national Ministry of Health said on late Wednesday.

According to the ministry, the death toll has risen by 800 to 588,597 people within the same period of time.

More than 20.13 million patients have recovered since the start of the outbreak.

A day earlier, the country confirmed 13,406 new coronavirus cases, with 731 fatalities.

Brazil comes second in terms of the death toll following the United States with more than 666,000 fatalities, and third in terms of the number of confirmed cases after the US and India.

The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on March 11, 2020. To date, more than 226.27 million people have been infected with the coronavirus worldwide, with over 4.65 million fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.

EU Starts Accepting COVID-19 Passes From 7 More Countries

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) - The European Union on Wednesday validated COVID-19 certificates issued by seven non-member nations, a reciprocal move that will allow for more travel across the EU’s external borders.

"A total number of 42 countries – 27 EU Member States and 15 non-EU countries – are now taking part in the EU Digital COVID Certificate system", Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said.

The new addition to the EU’s digital certificate scheme includes Albania, Andorra, Faroe Islands, Israel, Monaco, Morocco and Panama.

The EU is working with other third countries on having them connected to the certificate system. The European Commission's digital initiative went live at the start of the holiday season in June, in a bid to revive the tourism industry.

New Pfizer Data Shows Vaccine Needs Booster Shot After 6 Months to Stay Robust - FDA

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - New data on the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19 shows that its recipients need a booster shot after half a year to maintain its effectiveness against the virus, including the Delta variant, according to company documents released by the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday.

"The totality of the available data supports the public health need for a booster (third) dose of BNT162b2 at approximately six months after the second dose of BNT162b2 for individuals 16 years of age and older", Pfizer's executive summary of the documents as released by the FDA said.

A retrospective cohort study conducted at Kaiser Permanente Southern California suggested that the observed erosion in vaccine effectiveness was primarily due to waning effectiveness rather than due to Delta increased transmissibility, the study revealed.

"Recent data from Israel and the United States in the context of the Delta Variant of Concern (VOC) predominant circulation suggest that vaccine protection against COVID-19 infection wanes approximately six to eight months following the second dose", the Pfizer study concluded.

Austria Confirms Record Low COVID-19 Cases Per Day Over 4th Wave of Pandemic

VIENNA (Sputnik) - Austria has recorded around 2,600 cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, marking the lowest daily increment during the fourth wave of the pandemic since August, the interior ministry said on Wednesday.

The latest 2,624 cases have brought the country's overall total of those infected to 715,893.

The death toll over the given period has risen to 10,856, while as many as 682,971 people have fully recovered.
