UN Envoy for Afghanistan Discusses Safety of Aid Workers with Taliban - UNAMA
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons met on Wednesday with the Afghan Minister of Interior, Siraj Haqqani, appointed by the Taliban (banned in Russia), to discuss the safety of humanitarian staff working in the country, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a statement.

"UN envoy Deborah Lyons [and] the Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security today met Siraj Haqqani, stressing the absolute necessity for all UN [and] humanitarian personnel in Afghanistan to be able to work without intimidation or obstruction to deliver vital aid [and] conduct work for Afghan people", UNAMA said via Twitter.

In the meeting, the officials also addressed the issue of mutual trust to improve the situation in Afghanistan, especially in restarting the economy, ensuring that civil servants and health workers are paid and that medicines and food are reaching Afghans in need.
Before heading back to Kabul, Lyons met in Doha, Qatar, with Afghan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai. The officials discussed the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, the importance of an inclusive government and the country’s ability to respond to the economic challenges, UNAMA said.

Afghanistan Requests Pakistan to Open For Commercial Flights on Two National Airlines
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Afghanistan's Aviation and Transport Ministry has sent a request letter to the Pakistani Civil Aviation Authority to open the country for commercial flights from Kabul operated by two Afghan airlines, the Dawn newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The request dates back to Monday and names the Ariana Afghan Airlines and Kam Air carriers as potential operators of flights to Pakistan, according to the Pakistani newspaper.

The letter cited Doha's role in the reparation efforts of the Kabul airport, damaged during the foreign withdrawal and evacuation efforts in August. The Qatari authorities, which deployed specialists to restore the airport, announced the completion of works last Thursday. The facility has been open for international and domestic planes ever since.

Pakistan was among the first nations to launch air operations to Afghanistan along with Qatar, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, and the United Arab Emirates.

Three UN Flights With Medical Supplies to Afghanistan Carried Out Since Sunday
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) has delivered three batches of medical supplies to Afghanistan, where over 90 percent of families do not have enough food to eat, according to the United Nations.

"The WFP-led Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) has completed three cargo flights since the reopening of the air link to Kabul on 12 September, bringing in medical supplies on behalf of the World Health Organization," the United Nations said on Tuesday.

UN World Food Programme (WFP) spokesperson, Tomson Phiri, said as cited by the UN that prior to the three cargo flights, UNHAS flights between Islamabad, Pakistan, and the Afghan towns of Mazar-i-Sharif, Kandahar and Herat had been up and running since 29 August.

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU was going to increase its humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, providing an extra 100 million euros ($118 million) as part of a new, wider Afghan support package.

The WFP said on Tuesday that it was establishing a humanitarian logistics hub in Termez, Uzbekistan, to position food for Afghanistan, which is facing a major economic crisis exacerbated by last month’s Taliban (banned in Russia as a terrorist organisation) takeover that caused many countries to halt aid to Afghanistan.

Earlier this month, the United Nations appealed for $606 million to support vulnerable Afghans until the end of 2021. On Monday, international donors at the conference in Geneva pledged to provide $1.2 billion to support humanitarian action in the country, exceeding the amount requested. The WFP had said that it needs $30 million to keep air services going on top of the requested $200 million to replenish its food pipeline.
