The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Friday adopted a resolution that recommends individuals with compromised immune systems should receive a third dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine against the novel coronavirus.

"An additional dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (≥12 years) or Modern COVID-19 vaccine (≥18 years) is recommended following a primary series in immunocompromised people," the ACIP said.

The ACIP approved the recommendation in a unanimous 11 - 0 vote after the US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday authorized the emergency use of the third dose of Pfizer or Moderna for immune-compromised individuals.

The recommendation does not apply to the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to a lack of available information about whether an additional dose would be safe and effective.

A US judge on Friday rejected a bid by a group of landlords to block a moratorium on evictions put into place to protect economically distressed people from being made homeless.

“Accordingly, it is… ordered that the Third Amendment Lawyers Association’s motion for leave to file brief is denied as moot,” Judge Dabney L. Friedrich wrote in her ruling that blocked lawyers for the landlords in the state of Alabama from challenging the moratorium put into place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Judge Friedrich also ruled that the landlords must go to the US Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia if they wished to mount another challenge to the 60-day CDC moratorium that is set to expire on October 3.

The moratorium has been in place since the height of the coronavirus pandemic last year and was originally due to expire at the end of July. It was nevertheless extended after President Joe Biden told Congress that many renters still faced financial difficulties due to the pandemic and those driven from their homes could face heightened risk from the more dangerous Delta variant of the virus.

Over the past week, an average of roughly 124,200 coronavirus cases have been reported each day in the United States alone, an increase of 86 percent from two weeks ago. Average daily hospitalizations are up to more than 68,800, an 82 percent increase over the last two weeks. The number of new deaths reported is up by 75 percent, to an average of 552 deaths per day.

Passengers in Denmark will be exempt from wearing masks in public transport starting August 14 in light of progress in their vaccination campaign, the Ministry of Transport and Housing stated on Friday.

"Now, the situation is as follows: the major part of the population has been vaccinated, and we are getting back to the more habitual every-day life. It means that we can say goodbye to masks in buses, trains, and underground," Benny Engelbrecht, the minister for transport, said.

Exactly a year ago the Danish were obligated to wear masks on public transport, and the requirement was planned to be in effect until September 1, 2020.

Masks remain obligatory on planes and in airports, as long as this requirement is stipulated in the international rules.

At present, almost two thirds of Denmark's population of 5.8 million have been fully vaccinated. A total of 7.92 million vaccine doses have been administered to the Danish so far.

Bharat Biotech's intranasal vaccine has received the regulator's approval for Phase 2/3 trials.

This is the first of its kind COVID-19 jab to undergo human clinical trials in India. BBV154 is an intranasal replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus SARS-CoV-2 vectored vaccine. BBIL has in-licensed technology from Washington University in St Louis, US.

Phase 1 Clinical trial has been completed in age groups ranging ≥18 to ≤60 years. The Company reports that the doses of the vaccine administered to healthy volunteers in Phase I clinical trial has been well tolerated. No serious adverse effects were reported. Previously, the vaccine was found to be safe, immunogenic and well-tolerated in the pre-clinical toxicity studies. France witnessed a sharp increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations of newborns in July, Philippe Babe, a senior medic at the Lanval Hospital in Nice, told BFM TV broadcaster on Friday.

He noted that during the first outbreak of the pandemic, the hospital’s emergency department did not receive any children diagnosed with COVID-19.

"However, since July, their number has increased dramatically," Babe said, adding that over the past week 10 infants aged up to 12 weeks have been admitted to his hospital with the coronavirus.

Many newborns among those hospitalized had symptoms of fever, the doctor went on, pointing out that all infant patients had at least one parent infected with the disease, mostly unvaccinated.

In this regard, he called on parents and future parents to get vaccinated to stop the worrying trend of infant infections.

Norway's Health Ministry said on Friday that schools and universities will be allowed to switch to in-person learning as part of coronavirus restriction easing.

The Nordic nation rolled out a four-stage reopening plan in spring that would have seen it return to normal public life in July, but a rise in mutation-driven cases led to a delay in reopening.

"Despite the decision to postpone the fourth step, the government recommends that universities and high schools return to in-person teaching," Health Minister Bent Hoie told a news conference.

Prime Minister Erna Solberg said the country expected to receive an extra 1 million Moderna vaccine doses from Poland next week, which will allow it to speed up the immunization campaign.

"Thanks to this delivery, all adults aged 18 and above will be fully vaccinated within the first two weeks of September. This means that Norway can return to a more normal everyday life more quickly," she said.

Measures that remain in place include limits on home gatherings, recreational sport and dining out. The health minister said these restrictions could be lifted within the next month.

Japan reported a new daily high of 20,000 coronavirus cases on Friday, in a third straight day of record-setting infections, media reported, citing official figures.

The country, which hosted the 2020 Tokyo Olympics earlier this month, reported 18,000 new cases on Thursday and close to 16,000 on Wednesday, the Kyodo news agency said.

The number of patients with severe symptoms rose to a record 1,478 on Thursday, the health ministry was cited as saying Friday. The surge is linked to the highly contagious Delta variant.

The Olympic host city of Tokyo logged a record 5,773 daily cases on Friday, up from 5,042 a week earlier. The capital has 6,000 hospital beds and 400 intensive care beds. The number of ICU patients stands at an alarming 227.

Israel has launched immunization of citizens aged over 50 with a third COVID-19 vaccine dose, the health ministry reported on Friday.

"Health Ministry Director-General [Hezi Levi] accepted the recommendation by the expert group on vaccination against COVID-19 on the immunization of the third group of people, comprising those aged over 50, health workers, patients from the vulnerable category, inmates and prison staff," the statement read.

From today citizens over 50 years old can sign up for a third shot of the vaccine. Israeli Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz, 56, was the first in this age group to receive the third shot.

"I commend the team of experts on treating pandemics for making the right decision for the health of the citizens of Israel. Members of the team worked diligently, professionally and thoroughly, and reached the conclusion that the third inoculation for people aged 50 and over, and for medical teams, is effective and correct," Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said, as quoted by his office on Twitter.

The immunization drive was a success among people over 60 years old, he added, calling on all citizens over 50 to receive an extra vaccine dose as soon as possible.
