A year ago on May 25, Black man Floyd died after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground for about eight minutes with a knee on his throat. Floyd's death triggered protests against police violence across the United States and in several other countries. In the US, the rallies often resulted in looting and violence.

People are gathering for a candlelight vigil at George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Tuesday, one year after his death in police custody.

The vigil will end a day of commemorating Floyd's life and will take place at the exact spot where the 46-year-old was killed.

A trial determined "beyond reasonable doubt" that ex-officer Chauvin's actions violated police rules of engagement and became a major factor in Floyd's death. He was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in April, potentially facing up to 75 years in jail. Three other retired officers will also stand trial in this case.
