The global death toll from the coronavirus infection has topped 3.43 million, while over 165.8 million cases have been detected, according to Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media, and other sources.

The United States has the highest case count in the world, followed by India and Brazil, while the largest number of coronavirus-related deaths has been observed in the US, Brazil, India, and Mexico, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday said that the official global coronavirus mortality rate registered as of the end of 2020 was under-reported by 1.2 million fatalities after the agency addressed the issue of large-scale data gaps.

Germany has started to administer more second doses of COVID-19 vaccines in a single day than first ones, the country's Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Saturday.

"A new development, albeit an expected one: in the last two days, for the first time, there were more second vaccinations than first vaccinations in [Germany]. The second vaccination is important for full protection," Spahn tweeted.

According to the minister, to date, 33 million people in the country, amounting to 39.7% of the German population, have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, and 11.3 million, or 13.6% have been completely immunized.

The country began the inoculation campaign in late December 2020 within the framework of the EU vaccine rollout. German vaccination portfolio includes BioNTech / Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson drugs.

A study by Japan's Yokohama City University showed that 96% of people previously infected with COVID-19 still had antibodies a year after recovery, Kyodo News Agency reported.

The study looked at results from 250 people aged 21-78 who tested positive for the virus between February and April last year and found that those COVID-19 patients who showed more severe symptoms all had antibodies in the following year, while 97% of those with mild or no symptoms had antibodies in the first six months after being ill.

The study also found that only 69% of people who were sick with mild or no symptoms of COVID-19 last year had antibodies to fight the South African variant six months after being ill, 75% against the Indian variant, 81% against the Brazilian variant and 85% against the UK variant. The study further showed that these percentages declined in the following year.

The study concluded that former COVID-19 patients who were ill in the first few months of the pandemic, especially if they had mild or no symptoms, must still be vaccinated in order to avoid being infected with a COVID-19 variant from the United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil or India.

Russian scientists have already identified more than 13,000 coronavirus mutations, but most of them do not have any significant impact on the course of the pandemic, Rinat Maksyutov, the director of the Vector research center that developed the EpiVacCorona vaccine, said on Saturday.

"Since 15 June 2020, we have been continuously monitoring the genetic variability of the novel coronavirus. Every month, all Russian Federation regions send samples of viral isolates which are then subjected to genomic sequencing. To date, the joint efforts of all organizations in the country have already identified more than 7,000 complete genomes of the novel coronavirus. More than 13,000 mutations have already been identified from these Russian isolates," Maksyutov said at Russia-hosted science clinic New Knowledge.

Russia likely has tens of thousands of coronavirus variants currently circulating across its territory, according to the official. He stressed, however, that the majority of these variants have little effect on the "epidemic process" and that variants with higher contagiousness will likely become progressively more commonplace in all populations in the future.

The mutations that cause greatest concern get studied more closely at Vector, Maksyutov said.

"At the moment, 370 complete genomes have been identified in Russia for the British strain, 27 for the South African variant, and 10 for the Indian one," he added.

A health centre in the Itako city in the Japanese prefecture of Ibaraki has angered the public by recommending that farmers not share a meal with workers hired from abroad as a preventive measure against COVID-19, Japan's NHK broadcaster reported on Saturday.

According to the outlet, the centre distributed the recommendation by email, citing "a rise in  COVID-19 infections whose source could be a foreigner." In addition to the recommendation "not to eat with foreigners," the letter recommended that Japanese farmers wear a mask when talking to migrant workers.

Two days after the emails were sent, the city administration reportedly began receiving complaints over the recommendation being of questionable appropriateness. As a result, the letter was withdrawn, and the representatives of the Itako health centre apologized, stressing that they did not mean to offend anyone's national feelings or display discrimination.
