The global death toll from the coronavirus infection has topped 3.278 million; over 157.2 million cases of the infection have been detected, according to Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media and other sources.

Currently, among the most affected nations are the US (32.6 million infected, 581,000 deaths), India (21.8 million cases, 238,000 fatalities), and Brazil (15.1 million cases, and a death toll of over 421,000).

EU leaders debated the US proposal to suspend vaccine patents as a way to increase global supply. Von der Leyen said the bloc was ready to go into that discussion but warned that the EU would look at it from a long-term perspective.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of India’s national capital territory Delhi, announced on Sunday that the coronavirus lockdown would be extended by a week until May 17.

"Coronavirus cases have reduced, but it [the lockdown] cannot be relaxed at any cost. The Delhi government has decided to extend the lockdown for another week," he said, adding that the rules would be toughened.

The lockdown took effect on April 19 after India reported an unprecedented rise in coronavirus cases. The government asked people to work from home and imposed a night-time curfew.

Further 13,336 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Delhi in the past 24 hours, and 273 people died from the virus. The positivity rate, which averages the share of positive test results, has declined to 21.67% from 35% in April.

The Kazakh Ministry of Health on Sunday dismissed data presented by the US Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) that claims the real death toll from the coronavirus significantly exceeds the figures provided by the authorities.

Earlier this week, the IHME published its estimations of COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths in different countries based on a new approach. The institute included Kazakhstan in the top 20 countries with the highest numbers of COVID-19 fatalities. According to the IHME, the real number of COVID-19 deaths in the country amounts to 81,696 instead of the reported 5,620, with the mortality rate per 100,000 totalling 444.2 instead of 30.6

"Since the outbreak of the pandemic in the Republic of Kazakhstan, 6,575 people died from the coronavirus, not 81,696, as reported by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation," the ministry said in a press release, noting that 4,729 people died in 2020 and 1,846 in the first four months of 2021.

According to preliminary statistics, the number of deaths in Kazakhstan in 2020 compared to 2019 increased by 21.8%, or by 29,124, which also refutes the figures presented by the institute, the ministry added.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Sunday that his government might give big festivals a go-ahead in the second half of this summer.

"Our country is the world’s festival focal point, we will prove it again this summer. In the second half of summer, the major festivals must be allowed to resume," he tweeted.

Access to the mass gatherings, which are banned in Belgium due to the pandemic, will be conditional on testing and vaccination. The government’s consultative committee will meet on Tuesday to set conditions for the grand reopening.

European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton said on Sunday that the European Union had not renewed the order for AstraZeneca shots beyond June yet.

"We have not renewed the order for after the month of June. We will see. We will keep an eye on the events," he told the France Inter radio.

Breton defended the UK-Swedish coronavirus vaccine, saying Europeans had a "great deal of confidence" in the EU drug regulator. The European Medicines Agency has recommended using AstraZeneca because its benefits outweigh the risks.

The EU medical agency admitted in April that there was a link between AstraZeneca and "very rare" blood clots in the brain. It also said on Friday that the vaccine was being probed over a possible link to the Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological disorder caused by the immune system attacking nerves.

A mass vaccination hub will open in Sydney Olympic Park on 10 May as Australia's New South Wales aims to double the number of shots distributed in the region to over 60,000 each week and catch up with other states in vaccination rate, national media reported.

According to 9News, the hub will operate six days a week, with the weekly capacity to administer 30,000 vaccine doses. NSW is thus looking to follow in footsteps of the neighboring state of Victoria that managed to double inoculations after rolling out several mass vaccination hubs.

"People are turning up to be vaccinated in Victoria and we want to see that happen in NSW ... I am hoping it is as successful as Victoria. Not that we have competition between NSW and Victoria but Victoria is leading the charge," Jane Halton, a member of the executive board of Australia's National COVID-19 Coordination Commission, said, as quoted by 9News.

The Olympic Park hub will first inoculate frontline health workers and other high-priority groups. From 24 May, anyone aged over 50 will be able to receive their vaccines there too.

Russia has received the Indian mutant strain of the coronavirus to study it, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told Sputnik on Sunday.

"We have the Indian strain of the coronavirus," Murashko said.

Commenting on Russia's Sputnik Light coronavirus vaccine, the minister noted that foreign countries were showing great interest in the shot.

"It has just been registered," Murashko replied, when asked whether Moscow had received requests to supply the vaccine.

The single-dose Sputnik Light vaccine authorized for use in Russia earlier this week is the first component of Sputnik V — a vaccine based on recombinant human adenovirus serotype number 26 (rAd26) vector. It has proven effective against all new strains of the coronavirus, with no serious side effects registered following the inoculation.
