Sheikh Hamdan had served as UAE finance minister since 1971, also becoming the deputy ruler of Dubai in 2006. He was the second son of late ruler Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and the elder brother of the current UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid.

"We belong to God and to Him we shall return ... May God have mercy on you, my brother, my support and my companion", Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said in a Twitter post on Wednesday.
