Live Updates: Situation in Armenia Amid Political Tensions

On Thursday, the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Opposition supporters are arriving at the tent camp set up in downtown Yerevan, near the parliament building.

The camp, consisting of roughly a dozen tents, was set up along Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, not far from the parliament, which is set to convene for a session at 11 a.m. local time (07:00 GMT). Around 200 opposition supporters spent the night in the camp; they were burning bonfires to keep warm. In the morning, new groups of opposition supporters began to arrive there with food and warm clothes.

Armenian President Armen Sarkisyan on Friday visited the General Staff of the Armed Forces to meet with its chief, Onik Gasparyan, whose dismissal was requested by the prime minister, Nikol Pashinayan, the presidential press service said.

"Armenian President Armen Sarkisyan visited the General Staff of the Armed Forcess, where he met with the GS chief Onik Gasparyan," the statement said, without giving any other details.

Earlier in the day, a presidential aide said that the president had not sent back to Pashinyan his request to have the chief of general staff fired.

Armenian President Armen Sargsyan told members of the opposition during a meeting on Friday that he plans to continue consultations on the dismissal of Armed Forces' General Staff Chief Onik Gasparyan, Artur Vanetsyan, the head of the opposition Homeland party, said.

"The president said that he would continue political consultations, listen to all parties and make a decision. He did not speak about a specific decision," Vanetsyan said after the meeting.

A political crisis erupted in Yerevan after the deputy chief of the Armenian general staff mocked Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's controversial comment about the alleged failure of Russian-supplied Iskander missiles during the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. This triggered a series of military dismissals. The armed forces issued a statement demanding the resignation of Pashinyan himself, the prime minister regarded this an attempted coup and called on his supporters to take it to the streets. Meanwhile, Gasparyan has not tendered resignation despite Pashinyan’s demands.

Armenia's ruling faction undermined a parliament session for the second time in a row, and the quorum is now impossible, opposition lawmaker, Arman Abovyan, told Sputnik on Friday.

"The ruling faction derailed the meeting of the council. The time for the quorum is done. There will be no session," Abovyan said.

Armenian Armed Forces' General Staff Chief Onik Gasparyan has not tendered resignation despite demands of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, a general staff spokesman told Sputnik on Friday.

On Thursday, Pashinyan called on Gasparyan to step down voluntarily, since President Armen Sargsyan had not signed the decree on his dismissal.

"No," spokesman Samvel Asatryan said, when asked if Gasparyan has handed in resignation.

Earlier in the day, Sargsyan's aide told Sputnik that the president intended to hold a meeting with Gasparyan.

Armenian President Armen Sargsyan plans to hold a meeting with the general staff chief, Onik Gasparyan, amid the political crisis that emerged over disagreements between the military and the government, an aide to the Armenian leader told Sputnik on Friday.

"The president plans to hold a meeting with the general staff chief," Asmik Petrosyan said, noting that the date of the talks remains uncertain.

The presidential administration specified that Sargsyan had earlier initiated a series of consultations in a bid to de-escalate the situation.

An Armenian opposition leader and the chairman of the Bright Armenia liberal party, Edmon Marukyan, announced he would hold a meeting with President Armen Sargsyan later on Friday to discuss the domestic political developments amid growing tensions, triggered by the general staff's calls for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's resignation.

"I intend to meet with the president of the republic today to discuss the domestic political situation," Marukyan said.

Azerbaijan is ready to improve relations with Armenia and is not ruling out the possibility to sign a peace treaty, President Ilham Aliyev said on Friday.

If Yerevan does not "play cunning and lie," Baku will be eager to "strengthen contacts," the president assured international reporters at a press conference.

"Of course, if everything goes on as we believe it will, we are not ruling out signing a peace treaty at some stage, as the November 10 statement is de facto a peace deal already," Aliyev added.

"What else are peace treaties about? One side defeats another side, this side sings an act of capitulation. The document that was signed on November 10 is de facto an act of Armenia's complete capitulation. So, we are certainly ready to follow this path," Aliyev continued.
