The social media platform previously rolled out its strategy related to Inauguration Day, which included a ban on political advertising. The strategy builds on Facebook's policy of "battling misinformation" introduced ahead of the US election.

Facebook has tightened its regulations ahead of Inauguration Day in the US, banning ads that promote weapon accessories and protective equipment at least through 22 January.

The social media giant already has guidelines prohibiting ads for weapons, ammo and weapon enhancements, but the new ban will now also encompass gun safes, vests and gun holsters in the United States.

Facebook has introduced a set of new measures this week, ahead of Inauguration Day. As part of the new policies, the network suspended political advertising, prohibited mention of 'stop the steal' and blocked the creation of Facebook events in close proximity to major government buildings.

The measures, taken in the wake of the storming of the US Capitol, aim to "stop misinformation and content that could incite further violence".

The US Capitol was stormed by Trump supporters on 6 January during the certification of election results. The ensuing riot resulted in five deaths.
