According to Rustavi 2 TV channel, the streets surrounding the building where hostages have been held are now blocked off.

An armed man took nine people hostage at an office of a microfinancing organisation in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Friday, the country's interior ministry said.

According to eyewitnesses, there were five attackers, armed with grenades.

Sputnik Georgia has reported that the police have managed to negotiate the release of two hostages. However, more people remain inside the building of the MBC Business Capital company on Tsereteli Avenue.

This comes almost a month after a gunman took more than 40 hostages in an office of the Bank of Georgia, in Zugdidi. The attacker asked for $500,000 ransom and managed to escape. He remains at large.

On the video, a suspected attacker, who has been identified as Levan Zurabishvili, appears to be drunk.

He demanded that all lawmakers gathered in parliament adopt a law that would ban all kinds of gambling across the country.

According to some sources, Zurabishvili either did not have his credit approved at MBC or was facing having his property confiscated because he was unable to pay his credit bill.

He also demanded interest rates and prices for medicines be reduced and pensions increased.

The company says that it has been coordinating its actions with the interior ministry and will do their best to solve the issue peacefully.

"Health and security of our employees is our top priority", the company added.
