US Election Live Updates: Supreme Court Orders PA to Segregate Ballots Arrived After Election Day

Subscribe
On 3 November, US voters headed to the polls to vote in the 2020 presidential and congressional elections, but uncertainty remains over when the results will be known, given the record influx of mail-in ballots.

US President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden are neck and neck as the race for the presidential election comes down to the wire with four battleground states close to finishing their vote counts.

Hours after polling places closed on 3 November, both President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden claimed that they were on the path to winning.

As votes are still being counted, some states have said that they will only have some votes counted later this week.

Biden so far has secured 264 electoral votes after winning the state of Michigan, while Trump has 214 electoral votes. 270 electoral votes are required to be declared the winner.

The Trump campaign has alleged for months that fraud may result from the mail-in ballot process, as a last-minute count delivered a narrow win to the president’s rival in Michigan. On Wednesday, the campaign filed lawsuits in the key toss-up states of Michigan, Georgia and Pennsylvania in order to stop the counting of ballots.

Philadelphia Mayor Says Trump Should Concede Election Defeat, Congratulate Biden

Pennsylvania Mayor Jim Kenney said on Friday that US President Donald Trump should concede losing the 2020 presidential election instead of voicing allegations of electoral fraud and instead congratulate his opponent Joe Biden on his victory.

"I think what the President needs to do is... to acknowledge the fact that he lost and he needs to congratulate the winner, just as Jimmy Carter did, just as George W. Bush did," Kenney said during a press briefing.

Trump is trailing Biden in the state of Pennsylvania and if the trend persists the Democratic nominee will win 20 electoral votes that will enable him to win the presidency.

Trump has dismissed the figures, saying they are a result of a massive fraud in Democratic-run constituencies. Trump led by a significant amount of voters on Tuesday night when several Democratic-run states stopped counting until Wednesday morning. Trump claimed batches of ballots were found overnight and together with other irregularities and corrupt practices contributed to Biden's lead.

"[Trump has to] stop this and let us move forward as a country... That’s my feeling, I doubt he will listen to me," Kenney said.

Trump Can Not Call US Election Rigged, Stolen, Senator Romney Says

US President Donald Trump has no right to call the presidential election rigged and stolen, Senator Mitt Romney said in a statement on Friday.

Romney also said the Trump’s characterization damages freedom and weakens the institutions that lie at the foundation of the United States.

Romney explained that the president can request voting recounts and call for an investigation of the alleged election irregularities.

"Doing these things is consistent without election process," Romney said.

Georgia Mandates Certification By November 20, No Recount Can Start Before Then, Official Says

A vote recount in Georgia can not be requested before the state certifies the results on November 20, Georgia’s voting system implementation manager Gabriel Sterling told reporters on Friday.

Local officials say that if the margins remain within a 0.5 percentage point range, a recount of the vote may be requested.

"A recount cannot be requested until the election is certified," Sterling said.

Sterling explained that the "outer bound" for such a request is November 20.

"[O]ur hope and intent working with the counties just to move that earlier. And at that point whoever comes in second, whether it is President [Donald] Trump or Vice President [Joe] Biden... can request this recount," he said.

Biden is 1,586 votes ahead of Trump in Georgia - a state that carries 16 electoral votes.

Major US Broadcasters Cut Off Trump's Election Speech After He Claims Vote Fraud, Reports Say

Several major American TV channels interrupted the broadcast of the speech of US President Donald Trump after he alleged fraud and inconsistencies in the election results count, media reported on Friday.

According to the American technology news website the Verge, TV channels MSNBC, ABC, CBS, CNBC and NBC cut short their broadcasts of Trump's speech in which he accused opponents of trying to "steal the election," announced many electoral irregularities throughout the country and claimed that he would win the elections after the vote count.

"There are no illegal votes that we know of, there has been no Trump victory that we know of," MSNBC anchor Brian Williams said shortly after the broadcast was cut, as reported by the Verge.

A journalist for MSNBC reported that Twitter also interrupted the live broadcast of the president's statement on its app. According to the Verge, the social network did not respond to a request for comment about ending the feed.

"We’re interrupting this because what the president of the US is saying in large part is absolutely untrue," CNBC anchor Shepard Smith said, as reported by the Verge,

Donald Trump spoke at the White House on Thursday after almost a day and a half of being absent from public. After a statement in which he accused Democrats of violations and fraud, he did not answer journalists' questions. Senator Graham Will Donate $500,000 to Trump's Legal Efforts to Challenge Vote Counting

Republican senator Lindsey Graham has supported US President Donald Trump's statements on violations during the voting process in a number of states, adding that he would donate $500,000 to the Trump campaign's legal efforts to challenge vote counting.

Earlier in the day, a court filing revealed that the Trump campaign filed a federal lawsuit against the Philadelphia County Board of Elections seeking to temporarily halt vote counting in the city of Philadelphia unless Republican observers are allowed access to observe the polls.

"I am here tonight to stand with president Trump. He stood with me, he is the reason we are going to have a Senate majority ... He helped Senate Republicans. We are going to pick up House seats because of the campaign that president Trump won. I am going to donate $500,000 tonight to president Trump's defense legal fund," Graham told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday.

According to the senator, it is necessary to investigate the violations committed in a number of states, including Philadelphia and Nevada, as observers were obstructed from overseeing vote counting.

Along with the president's campaign, Graham demands that observers from Republicans be allowed to assist in ballot counting, and votes in Wisconsin be recounted, arguing that the election process was violated on the election night in a number of states where Democratic nominee Joe Biden overtook Trump.

Ballot counting continues in the states of Nevada, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Alaska and North Carolina.

Nevada to Continue Counting Mail Votes Coming in Until Next Tuesday, Secretary of State Says

The state of Nevada will continue to process mail ballots until November 10, Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske said, specifying that there are 123,554 ballots remaining that were either returned by mail or dropped off in person at specified locations in the state.

"Under Nevada law, mail ballots postmarked on or before Election Day and received no later than 5:00 pm on November 10 will be counted. This means there is an unknown number of ballots currently in the U.S. Postal Service mail stream that contain a postmark dated November 3 or earlier that will ultimately be counted if they arrive by 5:00 pm on November 10," Cegavske said in a Thursday statement.

Nevada law says that all ballots must be counted by the end of November 12, so final unofficial election results in the state are expected on November 13.

"In addition to the approximately 190,650 ballots remaining to be counted, there are two categories of ballots that are uncounted and will remain uncounted unless the voter takes the required action necessary for the ballot to be counted. First, there are approximately 2,500 provisional ballots that were cast under the requirements of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). These ballots will only be counted if the voter satisfies the required conditions by 5:00 pm on November 6. Second, there are approximately 3,500 mail ballots that require a signature cure," Cegavske explained in her statement.

According to Nevada’s secretary of state, out of the over 190,000 ballots statewide that remain to be counted, 123,554 are ballots that were either returned by mail or dropped off in person at a ballot drop-off location.

"The remaining 66,596 are ballots that were cast in person at a polling place, either during early voting or on Election Day, by voters who took advantage of Nevada’s new same-day voter registration law. Of the total ballots remaining to be counted, 90 percent are in Clark County," Cegavske said.

Japan-US Relations to Remain Unchanged Regardless of Election Outcome, Prime Minister Says

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Friday that close cooperation between Japan and the United States will remain unchanged regardless of which presidential candidate comes out on top.

“So far, the situation is such that it is not clear which of the candidates will win, but the Japanese-American alliance is for Japan the core of its foreign policy and security. We will continue close cooperation with the United States, there are no changes in this,” Suga said at a meeting of the parliament’s budget committee in Tokyo.

The prime minister went on to emphasize the importance of the ties between Washington and Beijing on Japan’s interests and global stability.

"The establishment of stable bilateral relations between the United States and China serves not only the national interests of Japan, but is important for peace and stability of the global community," Suga told lawmakers.

Wrong Size Paper Ballots Delay Vote Count in US State of Indiana - Election Headquarters

McGinnis explained that Vigo County election workers, which included a Democrat and Republican working together, had to recreate the odd size ballots on the "correct rolls of paper."

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Reportedly Rules Against Trump Campaign's Move to Allow Closer Scrutiny of Vote Counting

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has overruled a lower court's decision to temporarily halt vote counting in the city of Philadelphia, dealing a blow to the Trump campaign, a court filing obtained by Fox News revealed on Thursday.

"This decision was correct and Commonwealth Court erred; the campaign presented no evidence that the Board abused its broad discretionary authority or that its canvassing facilities violate the Election Code," the ruling said as quoted by Fox News.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court said the accommodations provided to the Trump campaign are entirely consistent with statutory and decisional authority.

"Accordingly, the Board respectfully requests that the Court defer to the trial court’s factual findings and to the Board’s decision-making, and affirm. In the alternative, because the campaign has not presented evidence that any particular remedy is appropriate, the Court should remand to the trial court for additional fact finding," the ruling said.

UK's Johnson Likely to Favor Trump Victory in US Presidential Election

A victory for incumbent US President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election will likely make it easier for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to reach a free trade agreement with the United States, Peter Westmacott, the former UK ambassador in Washington, told the Sky News broadcaster on Thursday.

"Frankly, I think from No. 10's [Downing Street] point of view, more Trump would probably be easier for the prime minister. There's a strong personal relationship and they get on, and Donald Trump says he loves Brexit and he says he's going to help with a free trade agreement," Westmacott said.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden, who is currently ahead in the election race, has previously said that any Brexit agreement with the European Union that would create a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland may impact free trade negotiations between Washington and London.

Some US Election Observers Removed From Absentee Ballot Counting Room in Michigan, Reports Say

Several observers of the 2020 US presidential election have been removed from a room where absentee ballots for the state of Michigan are being counted, and many more who claim to be election observers or challengers have been locked out of the facility, the CNN broadcaster reports.

A correspondent from the broadcaster who was at the scene on Wednesday evening said that roughly 134 Republican observers or challengers were inside the counting room at the TCF Center in Detroit.

Several individuals were removed from the facility after tempers flared, the reporter said.

According to video footage from the room carried by other media outlets, staff in the counting facility later proceeded to board the windows up to stop those who were locked outside from viewing the process.

Incumbent President Donald Trump tweeted a link to a Breitbart story covering the incident in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Trump earlier said that he would claim victory in Michigan if, in fact, a large number of ballots have been secretly dumped, which the incumbent president said had been "widely reported."

Michigan is a key battleground state that looks set to decide the eventual winner of the 2020 US presidential election. Trump led in the state until the counting of absentee ballots began and the Fox News broadcaster called the state for Democratic candidate Joe Biden on Wednesday afternoon.

Washington Police Arrests 4 in Largely Peaceful Post-Election Protests - Chief

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The election night protests in Washington, DC were largely peaceful and only four participants were arrested, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Peter Newsham told reporters on Wednesday.

"I was very pleased with the First Amendment assemblies that we had in the District of Columbia last night. They were largely peaceful in and around the White House," Newsham said.

Officers made four arrests, including two for crossing a police line and another two were apprehended for an assault with a dangerous weapon and interfering with the police just outside of Lafayette Square across from the White House.

The police chief said investigators are still unable to determine whether the assault with a bat and a knife that left three people wounded was politically motivated.

"We had three victims in that case - two adult males and an adult female. They all suffered non-life threatening injuries, they were taken to a local hospital," Newsham said.

The investigation is at an early stage and the investigators do not know the affiliations of the suspects and victims and an assault because of a political affiliation would be treated as a hate crime, Newsham added.

Some 240,000 Ballots Left to Be Counted in US State of Georgia - Secretary of State

"Right now, we have about 200,000 ballots left to be counted," Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters on Wednesday. "And there are also about 40,000 to 50,000 votes that need to be counted. Every legal vote will be counted."

Raffensperger emphasised that the election workers are making every effort to have the election results out today.

"We are pushing really hard for that," he said. "If we don’t get it there, but we get the numbers so small that then there is no question of who actually the winner is. I think that will be helpful."

At present, Trump has won 50.5 percent of the votes in Georgia and Biden won 48.3 present with 94 percent of the votes counted, according to media reports.

Georgia carries 16 electoral votes and is considered to be part of the so-called swing states despite its record of having voted Republican in the past.

Mail-in Votes Likely Favour Biden, But Mass Mail-in Ballot Open to Fraud, Ex-US Official Believes

While the vote count is still ongoing in the US presidential election, mail-in votes will very much likely favour Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, however, mail-in voting on such a big scale provides many opportunities for deception, according to former US Assistant Treasury Secretary Paul Craig Roberts.

"Mail-in votes will probably favor Biden. Polls indicated that Democrats were using mail-in voting more heavily," Roberts said. "Mail-in voting on such a large scale opens many avenues for fraud, but fraud is not always easy to prove."

The votes are still being counted in the United States where citizens have voted to elect a new president, as well as members of the House of Representatives, about one-third of members of the Senate, governors of 11 states and two territories, and local legislative authorities in a number of states.

"Wisconsin and Michigan are the crucial states for Trump. To reach 270 electoral college votes, Trump needs to win Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alaska. Currently he is leading in those states," Roberts said.

With regards to when the results of the election can be expected, Roberts noted that Wisconsin and Michigan votes should be counted by Thursday or Friday, or perhaps the earliest by Wednesday evening.

When asked if there was anything surprising for him in the current preliminary results, Roberts said he was surprised that President Donald Trump's lead in Michigan and Wisconsin disappeared between late last night and this morning.

The former US official also noted that Trump was doing better than was predicted by analysts.

"The pollsters said Trump was 10 points down. That doesn’t seem to be the case," he explained.

In the late hours of Tuesday, Trump declared that he had won re-election, adding that this year's vote was a fraud. The president said he would ask the Supreme Court to ensure the integrity of the election and prevent any ballots from coming after polling places are close.

"Last night looking at Trump’s leads, it did seem that he had won," Roberts said. "Either candidate could take a close election to court. If contested states count votes beyond the legal time and this throws the election to either candidate, it would be a court case. "

Biden’s campaign earlier stated that the counting of duly cast ballots would continue, dismissing Trump’s remarks as "outrageous." The Biden team warned that they would have the legal teams ready if Trump went to the Supreme Court to contest the validity of vote counting.

At the time of writing, Biden is in the lead with 238 electoral votes to 213 electoral votes for Trump.

US Election Outcome Still Undecided as Vote Recounts, Legal Battles to Follow, Pollster Says

The outcome of the US presidential race is still much undecided, as the close race in some states makes vote recounts and legal battles very likely, John Zogby, a public opinion pollster and the founder of political consulting firm John Zogby Strategies, said.

Despite some states still counting votes, President Donald Trump has earlier declared that he won the 3 November election, adding that this year's vote was a fraud.

"It is premature for him to declare victory. There are still millions of votes to be counted, especially in battleground states and the races are still undecided. Yes, it is still possible for Biden to win," Zogby said when asked whether the results are obvious.

The expert suggested that "if we are lucky," the United States will know the outcome by Thursday, but warned that "some of these states are very close so there will be recounts and court challenges."

He also expressed confidence that Trump would deliver on his promise to challenge mail-in voting.

"Postal voting will be challenged in court. The President promised that last night. And the very legitimacy of the vote will be challenged by a vocal minority of whichever side loses," he added.

When asked to assess Trump’s performance in key states, Zogby said that he "did well" among those who see the economy and its reopening as top issues and those who want a strong leader, law and order. He also noted that Trump had "spoken to the forgotten and in a language that is irreverent toward the establishment."

Serbian Diaspora in US Voted For Trump, Serbian Radical Party Says

"If Trump wins, it is thanks to the states with a large Serbian diaspora … These are the same states where Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton won the last [2016] election, but after our [Serbian diaspora’s] support for Trump, including our party, the balance of power changed. These are Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania," Vojislav Seselj, the leader of the Serbian Radical Party, said.

According to the RDS head, Serbs, both in Serbia and in the US, are rooting for Trump because Biden is "a great enemy of the Serbian people" due to his stance on the Kosovo issue, among other reasons.

"I think that in case of victory, Trump will follow the path of easing relations with Russia and China. For ideological reasons, he was forced to worsen relations [with Moscow], because from the very beginning he was accused of getting help from Russia in the [2016] election. Now he will not have such issues, since he will not face a new election, and he will be able to pursue a less tense foreign policy," Seselj said.

The Serbian politician added that he expects Trump to further escalate tensions with the EU member states as the incumbent US president considers Europe to be his main economic challenge.

UK Labour Party Top Official Says UK's Interests Lie With Biden's Victory

UK Labour Party lawmaker and shadow foreign minister Lisa Nandy said on Wednesday that UK's interests lie with a Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential election, but stressed that whoever wins the UK government must "reset" its relationship with the United States.

"The two candidates are offering very, very different paths for the world and there is no question in my mind that Britain's interests lie with a Joe Biden's victory," Nandy told Sky News broadcaster.

According to the Labour lawmaker, the UK would prefer a US administration "that wants to play a role in bringing the world together to tackle coronavirus, that wants to re-join the Paris agreement on climate change, that wants to work to rid the world of nuclear weapons, particularly in relations to Iran, which poses a real threat at the moment."

She said, however, that whether incumbent Republican president Donald Trump remains in the White House for another four year or the Democratic candidate defeats him, UK government needs to re-assess the bilateral relationship.

"The last four years have not produced gains for Britain and whilst Donald Trump has been very clear that he´s standing up for American interests, it´s not been at all clear that our government had managed to do the same. So, whoever wins, whatever the outcome, there is going to have to be a reset in UK-US relations," Nandy said.

The Labour lawmaker dismissed as a “misreading of the situation” claims that Biden is anti-British, and recalled that the former US vice-president has a long history of standing with the UK people and government.

"The problem is not Britain from a Democratic perspective, the problem is Boris and there is deep concern about the way in which Boris Johnson has cast himself in the mould of Donald Trump," she said.

She said, for example, that Johnson´s comments on Barack Obama´s ancestors are still remembered at the top of the US Democratic Party and left the UK in a “strategically weak” position in the outcome of Biden becoming the next president of the United States, but that is still an opportunity for the UK government to repair some of the damage.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Economic problems and racial inequality are the most important issues for US voters, while the COVID-19 pandemic comes only third, an exit poll conducted by the CNN broadcaster shows.

According to the poll, 34 percent of respondents primarily focus on the economic situation in the country, 21 percent view racial inequality as the main issue of the presidential campaign. Biden Campaign Manager Lauds 'Many Pathways' for Democrats to Win Presidential Election

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Jen O'Malley Dillon, the campaign manager for Joe Biden, has lauded the Democrats' "many pathways" to victory in the 2020 presidential election, adding that the party may not need to emerge victorious in a number of battleground states in order to gain the required 270 electoral votes.

"When we look to today, we feel like it is clear that we are winning. All the data that we are looking at really underscores how many pathways we believe we have to victory and how few Trump has," O'Malley Dillon said in a briefing on Tuesday.

Should the Democrats hold Minnesota, Nevada, Colorado, and Virginia, the so-called protect states, the party may be able to win the election without securing a victory in battleground states such as Texas and Pennsylvania, Biden's campaign manager said.

O'Malley Dillon added that data from early voting had the Democrats ahead in several battleground states.

"We believe the early vote data that we have been crunching every day since early votes started … have us leading by eight points in our battleground states coming into election day," she said.

Polls close in the 2020 US presidential election on Tuesday evening. More than 100 million mail-in and early ballots have already been registered by the U.S. Elections Project database.

Canadians Closely Follow US Election, But Do Not Expect Much Change Regardless of Outcome

Canadians across the political spectrum are attentively following the US presidential race, but do not expect much change in bilateral relations or in their daily life regardless of the election outcome, three Canadians said in separate interviews with Sputnik.

Joe Emersberger, 54, an engineer from Windsor, Ontario and a member of Unifor, Canada's largest union in the private sector, said he identifies as a leftist and views the US election as a choice between the lesser of two evils.

"The outcomes will be worse if Trump wins rather than Biden, in my opinion. But both outcomes are bad. We basically have two bad outcomes and one is worse," Emersberger said.

Emersberger said foreign policy tops the issues in terms of importance and cited the United States’ outsized role in Canadian and global affairs as a context for his heightened interest in the US election. He noted that Canada's international engagement has mainly become an extension of US foreign policy, with Ottawa supporting coups in Venezuela and Bolivia while standing in the midst of US diplomatic rifts with China and Russia.

As a unionized worker, Emersberger said he worries about the economic impact of the election, noting that the aftershock of years of anti-labour policies that have left US unions decimated could likely reverberate in Canada.

"[De-unionization in the United States] puts tremendous downward pressure on Canadian wages and working conditions as well. The labour movement in Canada ends up getting squeezed by the downward trend in the United States," he said.

Emersberger said he doubted much would change after the election.

"In the United States, the Democrats and Republicans, basically, are two factions of the same party," he said. "There is kind of a very closed off political discussion that dominates."

Kiro Attia, 27, an engineering consultant and self-described centrist, said he holds a pragmatic view of the candidates and on the impact, the outcome of the US election will have on Canada.

"I wouldn't really be pressed to see either candidate win or lose," Attia said. "Our lives in all aspects are very intertwined. Our economies rely heavily on each other and on the transfer of goods, services and travellers across the border. In this sense, US-Canada relations are important and impact who we see, what we consume, and how we consume it. I don't see any of these things changing drastically anytime soon."

However, Attia said he is leaning toward Trump in the matchup of imperfect candidates, as some analysts have billed the US election, saying that a Biden victory would reinforce a trend where meritocracy, logic and core issues are drowned out by rhetoric and moral grandstanding.

Attia also said that a Biden victory would have a negative impact on his investments, but noted that he does not believe his career prospects will be affected by any potential slowdowns.

"Media reports suggest that a Biden win will not affect the markets negatively, but I think my investments would react negatively to a Biden presidency and I think the long-term outlook in terms of major companies downsizing and/or offshoring is more likely to happen," he said.

Attia explained there is a two-fold reason shared by many Canadians for staying on top of the US election: the emerging new school of political thought and the entertainment value the 2020 campaign has brought.

"Canadian politics sort of lag behind and emulate American politics over time and Canadians are just tuning in to see a glimpse of what the political landscape might look like here soon," Attia said.

The proximity, as well as the lack of what he said, is "consequentiality" makes the US election easy to engage in without agonizing over its implications, he said.

Nevertheless, Attia said he laments the carnival-like atmosphere that has defined the campaigns and superseded policy discussion by propaganda, insults and antics.
