In September, the US Treasury slapped sanctions on several Russia-linked individuals for allegedly interfering in the US elections, including Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Derkach, who purportedly leaked compromising data related to former Vice President Joe Biden.

Reports suggesting that Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Derkach is a Russian agent possessing compromising materials on US Democratic candidate Joe Biden are "nonsense", Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Friday.

"I am not even aware of this... please, ask Russian intelligence services and better still - don't read such nonsense in newspapers", Peskov said answering a relevant question by the press.

Earlier, several major US media outlets reported that the Ukrainian MP was a Russian agent who had transferred sensitive information on Joe Biden to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Derkach was targeted by US sanctions in September as part of a broader American crusade against Russia's purported interference in the country’s democratic processes.

The lawmaker allegedly possessed audio recordings featuring conversations between former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Biden, in which the latter attempted to pressure Kiev to fire a prosecutor investigating a Ukrainian gas enterprise, Burisma, where his son Hunter was a Board of Directors member.

The Burisma case was instrumental in President Trump's impeachment proceedings last year as the Democratic Party, which initiated the probe, said Trump had pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to renew the criminal case against Burisma, or Washington would withdraw military aid to Kiev. However, Trump was acquitted in February on both charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
