China’s containment of the coronavirus and its response to the pandemic has been integral to its economic recovery and ability to post growth for this year, the only country to do so, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said Thursday.

"China has taken to containing the pandemic very decisively and with measures to provide a potent stimulus for the economy," Georgieva said at the 42nd meeting of the IMF-led International Monetary and Financial Committee. "And we see the outcome in the performance of the Chinese economy and our projections for its future for next year."

The IMF released its latest World Economic Outlook this week, predicting global gross domestic product will contract by 4.4 percent in 2020. China was the only economy to show a positive growth in 2020, with its gross domestic product forecast to expand 1.9 percent this year, according to the report.

For 2021, the IMF projects Chinese GDP will grow by 8.2 percent.

Despite the praise from the IMF, as well as the World Health Organization, for its handling of the pandemic and response, China has been sharply criticized by the United States, particularly President Donald Trump, who accuses it of creating and spreading the COVID-19 which he calls the "China virus".

Georgieva told Thursday’s IMF meeting that a global economic recovery from the COVID-19 was underway but it will be partial, uneven and marked by significant uncertainty, requiring relentless fiscal support.

Lockdowns in four West Africa nations to mitigate the coronavirus pandemic have lead to a 60 percent increase in hunger, with an estimated $4.8 million children requiring outside aid to survive, Save the Children said on Wednesday.

"COVID-19 has deepened a food, education and healthcare crisis affecting the poorest and most vulnerable communities in four countries in West Africa. An estimated 4.8 million children under 15 in Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Chad, need help to survive and stay in school. This marks a 60 percent increase since the coronavirus pandemic swept the world," the humanitarian organization aid in a statement.

Families already struggling were forced into difficult choices, "like reducing their exposure to coronavirus by staying at home and going hungry, or going out to find work and feeding their families,” the release said.

The number of affected children in the two worst affected countries, Niger and Chad increased 176 percent and 169 percent respectively due to the COVID-19 crisis, according to the release.

Save the Children called for an urgent scaling up of basic humanitarian services in the region, including food and healthcare for vulnerable communities. Failure to act could lead to hundreds, potentially thousands, of preventable child deaths, the agency warned.

A single shot of the Chinese pharmaceutical giant Sinovac's vaccine against the coronavirus will cost around 200,000 Indonesian rupiahs ($13.60) when it becomes available in Indonesia, the Jakarta Post newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing the state-owned Bio Farma pharmaceutical company.

Honesti Basyir, the Indonesian company's director, said on Tuesday, as cited by the outlet, that the price was based on data received from Sinovac and denied reports that Brazil will get the vaccine at $1.96.

"The $1.96 price per dosage price is incorrect, because the shipping cost alone is at least $2 per dosage. Sinovac is currently seeking the origins of the report," Basyir said, as quoted by the newspaper.

Sinovac, which is the first company in the world to market the H1N1 vaccine, initiated the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, dubbed CoronaVac, in late January. Phases 1 and 2 of the trials on volunteers aged 18-59 started in the Jiangsu province of China back in April. The vaccine is currently undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials.

The Beijing-based company expects the vaccine to hit markets by the end of the year.
