Live Updates: Belarusian Police Use Water Cannons, Stun Grenades to Disperse Protesters in Minsk

This comes as unauthorised opposition rallies have been continuing in Belarus for more than two months since the 9 August presidential elections in the country, following which Alexander Lukashenko declared victory in seeking a sixth term.

Belarusian police used water cannons and stun grenades against participants of an unauthorized rally in Minsk, Natalia Hanusevich, a spokeswoman for the police department of the Minsk City Executive Committee, said.

In a separate development, a RIA Novosti correspondent, Sergei Popov, has been released from police custody after being detained along with other journalists in Minsk where they were covering a protest rally.

Some local Telegram channels claimed that police had used tear gas against people who had taken part in an unauthorised "March of Pride" in Minsk. However, Natalia Hanusevich, a spokeswoman for the police department of the Minsk City Executive Committee, said that police in Minsk had not fired gas at the protesters. She added that more than 10 people were detained during the protest.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - At least 564 people were detained during the unauthorized protests held across Belarus on Sunday, the Vesna human rights center, unregistered by the republic’s authorities, said.

Most of the detentions were made in the capital, Minsk. The Belarusian Interior Ministry has not yet released any information on detentions during the Sunday rallies.

Natalia Hanusevich, a spokeswoman for the police department of the Minsk City Executive Committee, told Sputnik on Sunday that law enforcement officers had to use water cannons and stun grenades against participants of an unauthorized rally in the Belarusian capital on Sunday. According to Hanusevich, over 20 protesters were detained.

Sputnik Belarus photojournalist Viktor Tolochko was detained twice on Sunday while covering the unsanctioned rally in Minsk. RIA Novosti correspondent Sergey Popov was also detained and released. Police said that the detentions were not actual arrests, but routine procedures to check documents.

Belarusian news portal tut.by reported citing a spokesperson of the Minsk city executive committee that administrative cases have started to be brought up against journalists detained during the Sunday protest.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Protesters were burning fires on one of Minsk streets late on Sunday night, the Belarusian state-run news agency Belta reported on its Telegram channel.

"Protesters lit fires in Syerabranka [a neighborhood in the Belarusian capital], in the center of the crossroads," Belta said.

According to the news agency, drivers were forced to take a different route in order to avoid the fires.

A total of about 3,000 people have been subjected to administrative proceedings in the Belarusian capital since the beginning of mass protests in August, Oleg Lavrukhin, the prosecutor of the city of Minsk, said on Sunday.

"We can say that today about 3,000 people have already been brought to justice in the city of Minsk alone for this entire period [since August 9] ... Of these, two-thirds are arrests, and the rest — more than a 1,000 people — are fines under Article 23.34 [violation of the organization or holding of mass events]," Lavrukhin said in an interview with the CTV broadcaster.

Nationwide protests have been ongoing in Belarus since the August 9 election in which President Alexander Lukashenko secured his sixth term. The opposition refuses to concede the defeat, insisting that its candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya won.

Sputnik Belarus photojournalist Viktor Tolochko has been detained for the second time in a day while covering a Sunday unsanctioned rally in Minsk. He was released an hour later.

Earlier on Sunday, Tolochko was taken to a police station where officers checked his documents, after which he was released. RIA Novosti correspondent Sergey Popov was also detained and released.

"Sputnik Belarus photojournalist Viktor Tolochko has been detained again, he was near the Pushkinskaya subway station," the news agency wrote on its Telegram channel.

Nationwide protests have been ongoing in Belarus since the August 9 election in which President Alexander Lukashenko secured his sixth term. The opposition refuses to concede the defeat, insisting that its candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya won.

Sergey Popov, a correspondent with Russia's RIA Novosti news agency who was detained while covering a Sunday protest in Minsk, said that he was released from police custody.

"I was released from the Oktyabrskoye police department after three-hour detention," Popov told the agency.

The correspondent was detained in downtown Minsk, not far from the Planeta hotel. Popov had all the necessary accreditation from the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

According to the Belarusian Association of Journalists, more than 20 local and foreign reporters were detained during the Sunday rallies across the country.

The police in Minsk have detained several dozen anti-government protesters during a rally on Sunday, Natalia Hanusevich, a spokeswoman for the police department of the Minsk City Executive Committee, said.

"Several dozen participants of the unauthorized mass gathering in Minsk were detained. They were taken to the police stations for investigation," Hanusevich said.

Belarusian police used water cannons and stun grenades against participants of an unauthorized rally in Minsk, Natalia Hanusevich, a spokeswoman for the police department of the Minsk City Executive Committee, said.

The country's opposition is holding an unsanctioned "March of Pride" in the Belarusian capital.

"A lot of people have gathered in the center of Minsk, the event is unauthorized. Water cannons and stun grenades were used against the protesters," Hanusevich said.

She noted that the police had repeatedly asked residents to refrain from participating in the unsanctioned rally. According to Hanusevich, over 20 protesters have already been detained.

In the meantime, security measures in the city have been stepped up, according to a Sputnik correspondent. Several special equipment units were deployed near the Central House of Officers located on the other side of the Independence Avenue.

Armored personnel carriers, water cannons and vehicles with barbed wire in their trailers are parked at the Sapiorau Street in the immediate vicinity of the Independence Palace, which serves as the presidential residence.

Earlier in the day, the A1 Belarus telecom provider said that the bandwidth of mobile internet in Minsk had been reduced.

"In compliance with the order of the authorized state bodies on October 11, the bandwidth of the mobile Internet was reduced in Minsk. Fulfillment of this requirement leads to a deterioration in the quality of the data transfer service or temporary unavailability of the service," the operator said on Twitter.

Nationwide protests in Belarus are ongoing since the August 9 presidential election in which President Alexander Lukashenko was reelected for a sixth term. The opposition did not accept the election result and has insisted its candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya won.

Viktor Tolochko, a photo correspondent for Sputnik Belarus, is among several other journalists earlier detained by law enforcement in Minsk. 

The media workers were supposed to cover an unsanctioned protest, which the Belarusian opposition traditionally holds in Minsk on Sunday afternoon.

Overall, about 10 journalists were detained in central Minsk for document checks on Sunday, the police spokeswoman said.
