The development comes following last week's escalation in the long-standing Yemen conflict between forces loyal to the government and Houthi rebels. The confrontation has been ongoing for over five years, despite a peace accord signed in 2018.

Saudi-led coalition forces have destroyed a drone launched at Saudi Arabia by the Houthi rebel movement, the Saudi Press Agency reported Saturday.

“Joint Coalition Forces have intercepted and destroyed this morning (Saturday) a bomb-laden UAV launched systematically and deliberately by the terrorist Houthi militia to target civilians and civilian objects in the Southern Region,” the agency cited the official spokesman of the coalition to restore legitimacy in Yemen, Colonel Turki Al-Malki, as saying.

Earlier in the day, the agency reported a similar drone attack that had also been repelled by the coalition.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces, led by President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, and the Houthi rebels for over five years now. Hadi’s forces work in close cooperation with the Saudi-led coalition that has been conducting air, land and sea operations against the rebels since March 2015.

On Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition prevented an attempt by the rebel Houthi movement to detonate a remote-controlled boat bomb in the southern waters of the Red Sea.
