The news conference comes as the United States celebrates Labour Day, which falls on the first Monday of September commemorating the American labour movement and the contribution of labourers to the development of the country.

Sputnik is live from the White House, where President Donald Trump is answering questions from journalists on Labour Day.

The president earlier announced the conference via Twitter.

The US labour market lost more than 21 million jobs from March through April, at the height of the lockdowns due to COVID-19. It then posted a strong rebound of 2.5 million jobs in May and 4.8 million in June. But the recovery began slowing thereafter, with 1.8 million jobs added in July and 1.4 million in August.
