The world is trying to curb the pandemic, which has already claimed over 837,000 lives worldwide. Countries re-impose travel restrictions and mandatory mask-wearing, while the medics are developing vaccines, with the first-ever vaccine, known as Sputnik V, registered in Russia earlier this month.

The overall number of coronavirus cases worldwide surpassed 24.7 million, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States (5.9 mln infected, 181,8000 deceased), and Brazil (3.8 mln infected, 119,500 deceased) are the worst-hit countries. India comes third in the number of cases (over 3.4 mln), while Mexico records the third-highest death toll - over 63,100 people.

In the meantime, European countries are also tightening pandemic measures to curb new outbreaks of the virus. Germany, however, is bracing for protests against coronavirus curbs, as a regional court allowed a mass rally in Berlin.

BERLIN (Sputnik) - Some 18,000 people gathered in downtown Berlin on Saturday to take part in a rally against coronavirus restrictions, but the police are not allowing the demonstration to begin due to violations of safety regulations related to the ongoing pandemic.

A spokeswoman for the police confirmed to Sputnik that approximately 18,000 people gathered in the Under den Linden Avenue in the German capital’s central Mitte district earlier in the day, but added that the law enforcement agency could not make estimates on how many people subsequently joined the rally. The spokeswoman said that the police are not allowing the protest to start because many demonstrators are not wearing face masks.

"We are working on the ground, and when it will become clear that the organisers can enforce the requirement to wear masks, then the rally can begin", the spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, the Berlin police said on Twitter that the law enforcement agency has informed organisers that the demonstration cannot go ahead due to safety violations.
