Coronavirus Live Updates: 4 People at Republican Convention Tested Positive for COVID-19

The pandemic has claimed over 830,000 lives worldwide so far, while the number of infected has surpassed 24.45 million, according to Johns Hopkins University. The highest daily increases have been confirmed in India, Brazil, and the United States, with major outbreaks across Latin America.

At the moment, the countries with the highest number of infections are the US (5.86 million), Brazil (3.7 million), and India (3.38 million). In the meantime, the death toll is rising in Mexico (over 62,500), who occupies third place in terms of fatalities after the US and Brazil.

BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) – Argentina has confirmed 11,717 new cases of the coronavirus across the country within the past 24 hours marking the largest daily increase since the start of the outbreak, with the total number of people infected with COVID-19 having reached 392,009, the national Ministry of Health said.

A day earlier, Argentina recorded 10,104 new COVID-19 cases and 209 fatalities.

"Today, 11,717 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, bringing the total number of [COVID-19] positive tests in the country to 392,009," the ministry said in a daily bulletin on late Friday.

The death toll from the coronavirus has risen by 222 to 8,271 people within the same period of time.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The number of people, who have died of COVID-19 in Mexico, has risen by 552 to 63,146 within the past 24 hours, Jose Luis Alomia, the director of epidemiology at the Health Ministry, said. 

He also said on late Friday that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases had increased by 5,824 to 585,738 within the same period of time.

A day earlier, the Latin American nation recorded 6,026 new cases of the coronavirus, with 518 fatalities.

BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) – Argentina decided to prolong the quarantine linked to COVID-19 pandemic until September 20, President Alberto Fernandez said.

The Latin American country introduced restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic on 20 March.

"In line with an agreement with governors, we decided to prolong sanitary isolation measures and social distancing until September 20," the president said on late Friday.

Fernandez said that the gatherings of up to 10 people would be allowed outdoors, but not in buildings. Argentine citizens will also have to respect social distancing rules and wear face masks.

Argentina has confirmed 392,009 COVID-19 cases so far, with 8,271 fatalities.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil has increased by 43,412 to 3,804,803 within the past 24 hours, the national Ministry of Health said on late Friday.

The death toll has risen by 855 to 119,504 people within the same period of time.

A day earlier, Brazil reported 44,235 new cases of the coronavirus disease and 984 new fatalities.

Brazil comes second in terms of coronavirus cases after the United States, which has recorded more than 5.9 million COVID-19 patients.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a statement said the White House's proposal to provide $1.3 trillion in COVID-19 relief would not be enough to meet the needs of the US public.

"Press reports are stating that Mitch McConnell has come down to $500 billion in his proposal and that Mark Meadows is saying that the White House might go to $1.3 trillion," Pelosi said in the statement on Friday. "Neither of these proposals would meet the needs of American workers and families."

Pelosi said Democrats are willing to negotiate a $2.2 trillion relief package.

On 8 August, President Donald Trump signed four executive orders, including one that jobless Americans be paid $400 weekly under an upcoming coronavirus stimulus bill. Democrats led by Pelosi say the compensation is inadequate and have called Trump’s executive actions, signed outside congressional approval, unconstitutional.

The United States has reported more than 5.9 million cases of COVID-19 and more than 181,000 deaths caused by the disease as of Friday afternoon, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - A man in the state of Nevada may be the first person in the United States to be re-infected with the novel coronavirus, the Las Vegas Sun reported citing state officials.

A 25-year-old man who contracted the virus in April and recovered and has been re-infected, the report said on Friday.

The man had a mild case of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in April, but struggled the second time he contracted the disease, the report said.

Other re-infection cases have also been reported in Hong Kong and Europe, the report added.

The United States has reported more than 5.9 million novel coronavirus cases and more than 181,000 virus-related deaths as of Friday afternoon, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) - The Peruvian authorities have extended a state of national emergency and localized quarantine until the end of September, the government said on Friday.

"The state of emergency is extended ... from Tuesday, September 1 to Wednesday, September 30 due to the dire circumstances of COVID-19," the government announced in a decree.

Peru has tightened quarantine measures for the first time in mid-March.

The mandatory quarantine and curfew will be extended in 18 regions out of 26, the government added. The ban on meetings and public gatherings remain in place, while children under 14 and senior citizens over the age of 65 will still be not allowed to go outside.

Peru has so far registered nearly 622,000 COVID-19 cases, more than 429,600 recoveries and over 28,200 fatalities. The Latin American country has one of the highest coronavirus-related death rates per capita.

TORONTO (Sputnik) - Canada is extending the travel ban for foreigners until 30 September due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said in a statement on Friday.

"Our government is extending the existing restrictions on international travel to Canada by one month - until September 30, 2020 - to limit the introduction and spread of COVID-19 in our communities," Blair said via Twitter.

The order does not apply to some US nationals, temporary foreign workers approved by the federal government and other select individuals, including diplomats and flight crews.

Blair said the strict quarantine protocols upon entry in Canada will remain in place. As of 25 March, Quarantine Act violators may be subject to a fine of up to $537,000 and/or a prison sentence in the duration of six months.

In addition, if a violator is found to have contributed to a risk of death of another individual, they can be subject to a fine of up to $720,000 and/or a prison term of three years.

In mid-March, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the government is halting the entry of most foreign citizens into Canada.

As of Friday, Canada’s public health agencies have reported more than 127,000 novel coronavirus cases and more than 9,100 virus-related fatalities.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan has surpassed 67,000 people after 869 new infections were confirmed over the past 24 hours, national media reported on Friday.

According to the NHK broadcaster, which compiles data provided by the country's state agencies and local governments, the country's total cases count has reached 67,350, including 712 patients who were infected aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in February.

Tokyo leads in terms of the number of new COVID-19 cases with 226 infections registered in the past day.

The death toll from the disease has increased by nine over the past 24 hours to 1,273, after 19 people died over the past day. while more than 54,600 COVID-19 patients have fully recovered.

Another 1,276 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours in the United Kingdom, taking the country´s overall number of infections to 331,644, the Department of Health and Social Care announced on Friday.

The latest government figures also show that the UK´s death toll now stands at 41,486, after a further nine people died within 28 days of their first positive test result for the disease.

In a separate statement, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies said the latest R number, which measures the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person, for the UK ranges between 0.9 and 1.1, and the growth rate is between -2 percent and +1 percent, meaning the number of new infections is somewhere between shrinking by two percent and growing by one percent every day.

France registered 7,379 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, just behind March 31 when the country confirmed over 7,500 new cases, the French Public Health Agency (DGS) said in a press release on Friday.

On Thursday, France confirmed 6,111 new cases.

"New confirmed COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours — 7,379 cases", the DGS said.

According to the DGS, over 4,500 coronavirus-positive patients are currently being treated in hospitals, and 389 of them are in the ICUs.

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (Sputnik) – Health authorities in Kazakhstan have detected 165 new COVID-19 cases over the past day, bringing the overall total to 105,408, the country's interdepartmental commission on the coronavirus said on Friday.

"We have registered 165 new cases of the coronavirus infection, including 111 people with symptoms and 54 without symptoms", the commission said on its Telegram channel.

The death toll from COVID-19 in Kazakhstan increased by nine to 1,563 people, while more than 95,000 people have recovered.

With more than 1,000 (domestic) flights the milestone of more than 100,000 domestic passengers in a day, the aviation regulator has warned that not wearing masks will see passengers end up on a no-fly list.

The period for which a flyer would be barred would depend on an assessment by the cabin crew.

"There will be exceptions such as if a passenger takes off the mask to eat or drink or due to any other issue. Passengers, who refuse to wear masks willingly, putting others in danger, will invite strict actions like being put on the no-fly list", the regulator said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – India has confirmed 77,266 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, marking the largest daily increase since the start of the outbreak, with the total number of those infected having reached 3,387,501, the country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Friday.

The death toll from the disease has reached 61,529 people, with 1,057 new fatalities recorded over the past day. More than 2.58 million people have recovered in India since the start of the outbreak.
