On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced a US-mediated agreement on the normalisation of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. The accord stipulates that Israel will halt its intentions to extend sovereignty over parts of the West Bank.

The landmark Israel-UAE agreement has drawn both praise and condemnation from across the globe since it was announced by US President Donald Trump on Thursday.

The United Nations, UK, France, as well as Egypt and Jordan - the two other Arab countries Israel has a peace agreement with - have welcomed the deal as a positive step towards peace in the Middle East.

The Palestinian Authority and Iran have strongly condemned the "dangerous" move, joined by Turkey who said "history will not forgive" the UAE for this step.

"In this context, we have noticed that Israel will suspend the extension of its sovereignty over part of the territories of the occupied West Bank of the Jordan River, under the abovementioned three-party statement. "The Chinese side has taken note of relevant reports, including those about the suspension of Israel's annexation of Palestinian territories and about efforts to achieve a just solution to the Palestinian issue. The Chinese side is glad to see measures toward easing tensions between Middle Eastern countries that contribute to regional peace and stability", Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a briefing.

The diplomat expressed hope that the concerned parties would take practical steps to resume an equitable dialogue about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as soon as possible.

"The position of the Chinese side on the Palestinian issue is consistent and clear: we will continue to provide strong support to the Palestinian people in their just cause for the restoration of the legitimate rights of the nation and the establishment of an independent state", Zhao added.
