COVID-19 Updates: Global Coronavirus Infections Climb by Record 259,000 - WHO

The pandemic is on the rise across the world, with the global COVID-19 count surpassing 14 million people, according to Johns Hopkins University. Considerable spikes in the number of cases have been registered in the US, India, and Latin America, including Brazil, Chile, and Peru.

At the moment the US remains the worst-hit country, with over 3.6 million infected and about 140,000 fatalities. Brazil is second with 2 million infected and 77,000 confirmed deaths, and India with one million cases, and a death toll of over 26,000. Numerous laboratories are conducting trials for vaccines in a bid to stop the pandemic.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The coronavirus pandemic has claimed the lives of more than 140,000 people in the United States, data from the John Hopkins University showed on Sunday.

According to the University’s coronavirus dashboard, which has become one of the de facto sources on global COVID-19 dynamics, the US death toll now stands at 140,105 fatalities from 3,708,555 cases of infection while 1.12 million have recovered.

This tally far exceeds other countries in all parameters. Brazil and India, in second and third place, have just over two million and one million registered cases respectively.

Globally, the virus has been found among 14.2 million people with 601,512 having succumbed to it as a result, John Hopkins University showed.

BEIJING (Sputnik) - China registered 16 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, 17 COVID-19 patients recovered over that period, the country’s National Health Commission said on Sunday.

Out of the 16 new cases, 13 are local, while the rest are imported. According to the commission, China registered 42 asymptomatic coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours.

The country’s total number of confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 83,660, the death toll is 4,634. The total number of recovered individuals in China stands at 78,775. The total number of imported cases is 2,007.

About a month ago, when a new cluster of coronavirus cases was detected in Beijing, China had 83,378 confirmed coronavirus cases, while the death toll has not changed since then (4,634).

The current coronavirus pandemic started in China in December of last year. As of early Sunday morning, there are 600,629 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed globally, while the total number of cases stands at over 14.2 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The United States, Brazil and India are the top three countries in terms of the number of confirmed cases. The United States, Brazil and the United Kingdom have the highest death tolls from COVID-19.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - More than 28,500 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Brazil in the past 24 hours and over 900 new coronavirus-related deaths were reported in that period, according to the latest data from the Health Ministry.

Brazil now has a total of 2,074,860 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 28,532 new cases having been registered in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said on Saturday. Over the same period, 921 new deaths were confirmed, bringing the country’s total death toll up to 78,772.

On Friday, Brazil reported more than 34,000 new cases and over 1,100 new deaths from COVID-19. A week ago, Brazil’s coronavirus death toll stood at around 72,000, thus the country has seen a weekly rise of about 7,000 coronavirus-related fatalities.

Over 1.3 million people have recovered from COVID-19 in Brazil since the start of the epidemic in the country, according to the health ministry.

WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan said on Friday that the coronavirus curve had plateaued in Brazil and that the country, which is only surpassed by the US in terms of total cases and deaths, could now push the disease down.

LONDON (Sputnik) - More than 800 new coronavirus cases were registered in the United KIngdom in the past 24 hours with the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country now standing at over 294,000 according to the Department of Health and Social Care.

"As of 9 am on 18 July, 294,066 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK," the health department said in its latest COVID-19 update.

According to the Saturday release, 827 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours. Daily COVID-19 death figures have not been released. As of 16 July, the coronavirus death toll in the UK stood at 45,119.

A total of 13,112,764 coronavirus tests, either processed or sent out, have been made available in the UK since the start of the epidemic in the country.

On Tuesday, British media reported citing UK scientists that a new wave of COVID-19 expected this upcoming winter would be more serious than the first and could result in about 120,000 new fatal cases if the authorities fail to take urgent action to avoid the epidemic.

On June 15, the UK government made wearing face masks on public transport mandatory. Earlier this week, a Downing Street spokesman announced that face coverings would become mandatory in shops across England starting from 24 July.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The global number of those infected with the coronavirus has increased by over 259,000 over the past day, the highest daily total so far, the World Health Organization showed on Saturday.

Friday's total was 237,743 cases, also a record.

On Saturday, the rise was even higher at 259,848 cases, with the global total now at 13,876,441.

The death count stands at 593,087 people, with over 7,360 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the WHO dashboard.

The Americas are leading with 7,306,371 cases.

WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on 11 March.

TEHRAN (Sputnik) - As many as 25 million Iranians may have been infected with COVID-19 and millions more may end up with the disease, President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday, citing figures that contradict official statistics.

In a televised meeting of the coronavirus task force on Saturday, Rouhani cited a heretofore unpublished Health Ministry report which suggested that most of Iran’s 81 million people may wind up acquiring COVID-19 at some point.

"Between 30 and 35 million people in the coming months may be exposed to the disease", Rouhani said to members of Iran’s coronavirus task force.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has registered 6,234 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours (6,406 yesterday), bringing the cumulative total to 765,473, the country's coronavirus response centre said on Saturday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 6,234 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 1,522 (24.4 percent) have been detected with people showing no clinical symptoms", the response centre said in a statement, adding that the total count has now reached 765,473 cases in 85 regions, with the daily increase standing at 0.8 percent.

Moscow registered 578 cases in the past 24 hours, which is more than any other region in Russia, followed by the Sverdlovsk Region with 259 new cases and the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region with 247 new cases (compared to 531, 349, and 252 yesterday).

The death toll grew by one to 9,083 people within the same period of time. Some 187,200 people have recovered since the start of the outbreak.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – India has confirmed 34,884 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, with the total number of those infected having reached 1,038,716, the country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.

The death toll from the disease has reached 26,273, with 671 new fatalities recorded over the past day. More than 653,000 people have recovered in India since the start of the outbreak.

The central Indian state of Maharashtra, with 292,589 confirmed cases remains the most affected region. It is followed by the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with 160,907 cases, and the national capital territory of Delhi, with 120,107 cases.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The North Korean science research council on Saturday said that it was developing a COVID-19 vaccine, according to South Korean media.

North Korean scientists are currently conducting clinical trials of the COVID-19 vaccine, the Yonhap news agency reported citing a website run by North Korea's State Commission of Science and Technology.

Pyongyang says that tests on animals have confirmed the immunogenicity and safety of its vaccine.
