The pandemic is on the rise in both North and South America, with the number of infected spiking in the US, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Peru. In the meantime, European countries are easing some restrictions and opening their borders, as the number of new cases is declining.

On Saturday, the world witnessed a record increase in the number of those infected - over 212,000 new cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation. At least 52,000 of those cases were registered in the United States, where the pandemic is on the rise following mass protests in June.

CAIRO (Sputnik) - The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Egypt has surpassed 75,000 while the country's death toll stands at over 3,300, according to the latest data from the country’s Health Ministry.

"1,218 new positive coronavirus test results have been registered … In the past 24 hours, 63 people died from the [coronavirus] disease," Health Ministry Spokesman Khaled Mogahed said in a statement obtained by Sputnik.

On Saturday, Egypt reported 79 new deaths from COVID-19, so there is an observable decline in the number of coronavirus fatalities in the country, which is the first downward tendency registered since 13 June.

"The total number of people infected with the coronavirus in Egypt is 75,253, of them 20,726 people have recovered and have been discharged from hospitals, while 3,343 people have died," Mogahed said.

The Egyptian authorities lifted coronavirus curfews in June and allowed restaurants, movie theaters and gyms to resume their work, provided that they limit the number of customers and observe safety precautions. Starting from 1 July, Egypt resumed domestic and foreign air travel, but parks and beaches, except for private hotel beaches, remain closed.

BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) - There are now over 300,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in Peru, the country’s Ministry of Health has announced.

"As of July 5, 1,782,846 people have been tested for COVID-19, as of 00:00, 302,718 tests are positive, while 1,480,128 are negative," the ministry said in a statement.

More than 11,300 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Peru; 1,227 of them are on lung ventilators, according to the health ministry.

Peru’s coronavirus death toll stands at 10,589. The death toll surpassed 10,000 at the start of this month. More than 182,000 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Peru.

In June, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra said that the government was planning to create more than a million new jobs in the second half of this year through investments in roads, housing and agriculture, to boost the country's economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Brazil has surpassed 1.6 million with more than 26,000 new cases registered in the past 24 hours, the country’s Health Ministry reports.

There are now a total of 1,603,055 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil. In the past 24 hours, 26,051 new cases and 602 new deaths from COVID-19 were confirmed, according to Sunday health ministry data. Brazil’s total coronavirus death toll stands at 64,867.

On Saturday, Brazil registered nearly 38,000 new coronavirus cases and more than a thousand new deaths from COVID-19. On Friday, Brazil reported 42,223 new coronavirus cases and 1,290 new coronavirus-related fatalities.

Brazil has seen a weekly rise of around 7,000 COVID-19 fatalities, which is the same increase as that of the previous seven-day period. More than 906,200 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Brazil, according to the country’s health ministry.

Brazil has the second-highest coronavirus death toll, it is surpassed only by the United States, which has registered over 129,800 COVID-19 fatalities, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. Brazil and the United States are also the top two countries in terms of the total number of registered coronavirus cases (the United States has the highest total of over 2.8 million COVID-19 cases).

TOKYO (Sputnik) - The number of new coronavirus cases confirmed in Japan over the past 24-hour period has once again surpassed 200, most of the cases were registered in Tokyo, Japanese media report.

On Sunday, 111 new COVID-19 cases were registered in Tokyo, The Japan Times said. This is the fourth consecutive day that over 100 new coronavirus cases are reported in the Japanese capital.

On Saturday, 131 new coronavirus cases were reported in Tokyo, the highest daily figure since 2 May. In total, the Japanese capital has more than 6,760 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Overall, Japan now has more than 20,500 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 712 patients who got infected with COVID-19 on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Japan’s coronavirus death toll stands at 990, while more than 17,700 people have recovered.

After 5 May, Tokyo saw a drop in coronavirus cases with fewer than 40 new cases reported daily. However, in the past days, there has been an upward trend in the number of new cases and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike urged residents on Saturday to avoid traveling beyond the capital’s borders.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Health authorities in the Russian capital city of Moscow have detected 22 new coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,975, the coronavirus response center said in a daily update on Sunday.

On Saturday, Moscow registered 24 deaths from COVID-19.

"Twenty-two patients with confirmed pneumonia and positive coronavirus test results have died in Moscow," the center said in an update.

The authorities also called on citizens to stay at home and not self-medicate if showing symptoms of acute respiratory viral infections.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Authorities of El Salvador have temporarily suspended the further abatement of coronavirus-related quarantine in light of the resurgence of cases and deaths since the first restrictions were lifted, the country's government said in a statement on Sunday.

The Salvadoran government began lifting the restrictions on June 16 as Stage 1 of a five-stage schedule, originally due to finish on 21 August. The second phase was scheduled to begin in early July and see food services, public transport and select industries resume operations.

"The government of El Salvador makes it known that the first stage of the plan for the resumption of economic activities has been extended for 15 days amid worsening health situation over the past weeks," the government said on Twitter.

According to the statement, Salvadoran health authorities have recorded a spike by 50 percent of the cumulative toll in the three weeks alone since the first restrictions were lifted. The same time period accounts for the plurality of all coronavirus-related deaths, as stated by the government.

This shifts the launch of Stage 2 to 21 July, while the last stage is currently scheduled to begin on 1 September, according to the statement.

El Salvador has so far reported 7,777 coronaavirus cases, including 217 fatalities and over 4,500 recoveries.

MOSCOW5 (Sputnik) - The global COVID-19 case count rose on Sunday by 203,836 to 11.1 million, while the death toll reached 528,204.

The UN health agency said in a new situation report that 5,195 fatalities were registered in the preceding day.

Americas and Europe continue to lead the count with over 5.6 million and 2.7 million cases, respectively.

The WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on 11 March.

HELSINKI (Sputnik) - The Estonian Foreign Ministry has included the Czech Republic and Croatia into its list of European countries whose tourists will have to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival to add up to Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Portugal, Sweden, Romania and the United Kingdom, according to a statement published the ministry's website on Sunday.

"From 6 July, the 2-week quarantine requirement will be applied to tourists arriving in Estonia from the Czech Republic and Croatia. This requirement remains in effect for arrivals from Sweden, the UK, Portugal, Romania, Bulgaria and Luxembourg," the statement read.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry is updating the list every week according to the coronavirus environment in the region. If the coefficient of the spread of the virus in a given country has been less than 15 cases per 100,000 people, Tallinn lifts the quarantine requirement.

Estonia opened its borders to arrivals from the European Union and Europe's Schengen Area on 1 June.

Health authorities in the Baltic country have so far reported 1,993 coronavirus cases and 69 related deaths.

MADRID (Sputnik) - The authorities of the Spanish autonomous community of Galicia have decided to lock down 70,000 people in La Marina region of Lugo province amid a growing number of COVID-19 cases, Jesus Vazquez Almuina, the health counselor for the regional government, said on Sunday.

"We consider it necessary to boost the level of requirements in the comarca [region] in order to try to improve the forecast and prepare for possible exponential growth," the official said.

The entry and exit from La Marina will be closed starting from Monday midnight through Friday.

The northern region has recorded about a hundred active cases of COVID-19. According to Almuina, the situation is under control, however, closing the municipality will help to contain the spread of the infection and avoid new outbreaks.

The movement inside the region will be allowed, however, the permitted number of customers in bars, restaurants, theaters, museums and local markets will be reduced.

This is the second Spanish municipality to introduce lockdown in the past 24 hours. On Saturday, the Catalan authorities decided to restrict entry and exit from the Segria region with a population of 209,000 people, where a jump in the number of coronavirus cases has been detected.

Spain remains the worst-hit European nation by the pandemic, with over 250,000 cases.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States has recorded 45,283 infections over the past 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed count to 2,839,917, data published by the Johns Hopkins University showed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 death toll in the country is approaching 130,000, with 242 fatalities recorded over the given period.

Over the past three days, the daily increase in COVID-19 cases exceeded 50,000. To date, more than 894,000 patients have recovered in the US.

GAZA (Sputnik) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday extended the state of emergency for one month amid a surge in the number of new COVID-19 cases, WAFA reported.

"The concerned authorities shall continue to take all necessary measures to face the dangers resulting from the coronavirus, protect public health, and achieve security and stability", the presidential decree read as quoted by the WAFA news agency.

The measure will allow the authorities to impose additional coronavirus-related virus restrictions, such as extending lockdowns, limiting movement between cities, and deploying security forces.

This is the third time Abbas has extended the state of emergency since 5 March.

As per a nationwide survey on the "Impact of COVID-19 on Indian Startups" conducted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), jointly with the Indian Angel Network (IAN), 70% of startups stated that their businesses have been impacted by COVID-19. Twelve percent of startups have shut down their operations and 60% are operating with disruptions.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A further 6,736 cases of COVID-19 have been registered in Russia over the past 24 hours, a slight increase compared to the 6,632 new positive tests reported the day before, the country's coronavirus response centre said on Sunday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 6,736 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 2,005 (29.8 percent) have been detected with people showing no clinical symptoms”, the response centre said in a statement, adding that the case total in 85 regions has grown to 681,251, with the daily increase standing at 1.0 percent.

The UK is close to agreeing a 500 million-pound ($624 million) deal with the pharmaceutical companies Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline for 60 million doses of their potential COVID-19 vaccine, The Sunday Times reported. A decision is expected to be made after human trials in September.

"The Government's Vaccines Task Force is actively engaging with a wide range of companies both in the UK and abroad to negotiate access to vaccines", a spokeswoman for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said. India announced its highest-ever single-day spike of 24,850 COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare told journalists. The country's coronavirus count now stands at 673,165 cases of which 244,814 are active.

The central Indian state of Maharashtra, with 200,064 confirmed cases, remains the most affected region. It is followed by the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with 107,001 cases, and the National Capital territory of Delhi, with 97,200 cases.

BISHKEK, July 5 (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kyrgyzstan has risen by 283 to 7,377 over the past 24 hours, the republic's coronavirus response centre told Sputnik on Sunday.

"As of 5 July 2020, 283 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been registered in the republic", a spokesperson said.

The death toll from the coronavirus in the Central Asian nation has risen to 88 people, while 2,802 people have been discharged from hospitals.

Thirty-two new patients are doctors, which takes the total count of infected medical staffers to 1,097.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Germany has confirmed 239 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, with the total count reaching 196,335, the Robert Koch Institute said on Sunday.

The death toll grew by two to 9,012 people within the same period of time. Over 181,300 people have recovered since the start of the outbreak. A day earlier, the country confirmed 442 new cases and seven fatalities.

Mexico has confirmed 523 deaths from COVID-19 over the past 24 hours. The spike in the number of fatalities puts the country in fifth place in terms of virus-related deaths after the US, Brazil, Great Britain, and Italy.
