The pandemic has claimed at least 498,000 lives worldwide, with over 9.9 million infected. At the moment, the numbers of infected are spiking in India and Brazil, while European countries are easing restrictive measures caused by the virus.

The United States still remains the most affected country, with over 2.5 million infected and at least 125,511 deaths from the pandemic. Brazil is second, as the death toll in the Latin American country is 57,070, and the total number of confirmed cases is 1,313,667.

TOKYO (Sputnik) - South Korea has reported another 62 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours that took the total count to 12,715, the Health Ministry's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said on Sunday.

Fourteen new cases have been recorded in the capital of Seoul and 17 in the province of Gyeonggi among others.

The death toll in South Korea stands at 280. The number of recoveries has grown by 47 to 11,364, according to the health authorities.

In early April, the daily increase in coronavirus cases in South Korea dropped below 40, later stabilizing at about 10-20 cases. On 6 May, it dipped to two cases. However, later, the authorities discovered a new cluster linked to a young man who visited several clubs in Itaewon and tested positive for COVID-19 on May 6. Since then, several more clusters have been registered, and on 28 May, the daily increment spiked to 79.

Meanwhile, for the past three weeks, the daily increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in South Korea had been within the 30-60 range.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Mainland China on Sunday reported 17 new coronavirus cases, mostly in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

The National Health Commission said 17 new infections were confirmed on Saturday, down from 21 a day earlier.

In Beijing, 14 new confirmed cases were reported, down from 17 a day earlier.

Since 11 June when Beijing reported its first case in the current outbreak, stemming from a sprawling wholesale food centre in the southwest of the capital, 311 people in the city of more than 20 million have contracted the virus.

Mainland China reported three new so-called imported cases on Friday, infections linked to travellers arriving from abroad. That compares with four cases a day earlier.

That took the cumulative number of confirmed cases in mainland China to 83,500.

Mainland China reported seven new asymptomatic patients, who tested positive for COVID-19 but showed no clinical symptoms such as a fever, down from 12 a day earlier.

The national health authority does not include asymptomatic patients in its tally of confirmed cases.

The death toll stood at 4,634, unchanged since mid-May.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Mexico now stands at over 212,800 while the country’s COVID-19 death toll is approaching 26,400 with over 600 new deaths registered in the past 24 hours, the latest data from the country's Health Ministry shows.

"There are 212,802 confirmed [coronavirus] cases in Mexico, another 67,099 cases are awaiting test results", health promotion chief Ricardo Cortes said during a Saturday press conference broadcast on Twitter.

In the past 24 hours, Mexico registered 602 new coronavirus deaths with the country’s total COVID-19 death toll now standing at 26,381.

On Friday, Mexico reported 719 new coronavirus-related deaths and 5,441 new COVID-19 cases.

A week ago, Mexico’s coronavirus death toll stood at around 21,000, thus the country has seen a weekly rise of about 5,000 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Mexico stood at around 180,000 a week ago.

Starting from Monday, the coronavirus risk level in Mexico City and in 18 of Mexico's 32 states will be downgraded from "red light" (maximum) to "orange light" (high).

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States has exceeded 2.5 million, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Centre.

As of 23:50 GMT, there are 2,505,593 coronavirus cases and 679,308 recoveries in the country. The death toll stands at 125,480.

On Saturday, the US reported a record daily increase of over 45,000 cases of infection.

The United States is leading the world in the number of reported novel coronavirus cases as well as COVID-19-related deaths.

There are currently 9,937,618 cases globally, while the number of COVID-19 deaths is approaching half a million.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Brazil's COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 57,000 and the total number of coronavirus cases in the country stands at over 1.3 million, according to Health Ministry data.

In the past 24 hours, Brazil registered 38,693 new coronavirus cases and 1,109 new deaths from COVID-19. Overall, Brazil has 1,313,667 confirmed coronavirus cases and 57,070 COVID-19 fatalities.

According to the country's health ministry, more than 715,000 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Brazil.

A week ago, Brazil's coronavirus death toll stood at around 50,000, thus the country has seen a weekly rise of 7,000 COVID-19 fatalities, which the same as that of the previous seven-day period.

Brazil has the second-highest coronavirus death toll, it is surpassed only by the United States, which has registered over 125,000 COVID-19 fatalities. Brazil and the United States are also the top two countries in terms of the total number of registered coronavirus cases (the United States has the highest total of over 2.5 million COVID-19 cases).

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United Arab Emirates has increased by 387 to 47,360 over the past day, the country's Health Ministry said.

The death toll has reached 311, with one new death recorded in the given period.

According to the UAE health authority, the total number of patients recovered from the disease has increased by 365 to 35,834.

Earlier this week, the Middle Eastern country completed its nationwide disinfection program and lifted the coronavirus-related curfew.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Moscow has registered 24 deaths of patients infected with COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the Russian capital's death toll to 3,738, the city's coronavirus response centre said in a statement on Saturday.

"Another 24 patients, who were diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus infection, died in Moscow", it said.

In the previous day, 20 people infected with the coronavirus died in Moscow.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The global COVID-19 case total has surpassed 9.6 million after more than 179,000 new positive tests were confirmed worldwide over the past 24 hours, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday.

According to the WHO's daily statistical bulletin, a total of 179,316 new cases were reported over the past day, a slight rise from the 177,012 new positive tests reported on Friday.

The organisation confirmed 40,526 new cases in the United States, 39,483 new positive tests in Brazil, and 18,552 new cases in India over the previous 24 hours.

As a result of the latest increase, the global coronavirus disease case total now stands at 9.65 million, according to the WHO.

A further 6,866 deaths were also registered over the past 24 hours, taking the global COVID-19 death toll to 491,128, the organisation said. The Americas region was the most severely impacted, recording 74.8 percent of all deaths over the past day.

BELGRADE (Sputnik) - Serbian Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin has tested positive for the coronavirus disease and has self-isolated, the Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

"After one of the state secretaries of the Defence Ministry was hospitalised because of a positive test for COVID-19, it was established during regular testing of all his contacts that Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin [has tested] positive for the coronavirus", the ministry said.

According to the Defence Ministry, Vulin shows no COVID-19 symptoms and remains in self-isolation.

Vulin also called on Serbian citizens to comply with health recommendations aimed at fighting the spread of the disease.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Kingdom is set to drop the mandatory two-week self-isolation requirement for people arriving from countries deemed favourable from the epidemiological viewpoint, UK media reported on Saturday, citing a government spokeswoman.

"Our new risk-assessment system will enable us to carefully open a number of safe travel routes around the world – giving people the opportunity for a summer holiday abroad and boosting the UK economy through tourism and business", the spokeswoman said, as quoted by the ITV broadcaster.

More specifically, the new risk-assessment system will have countries categorised into three colour groups with a "traffic-light" reference system, where the colour green means low risk, amber means moderate risk requiring attention, and red is for circumstances requiring an immediate intervention.

According to reports, the mandatory quarantine will be ditched for arrivals from green and yellow countries.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of people who have contracted the coronavirus in Russia has increased by 6,852 over the past day to a total of 627,646, the country's COVID-19 Response Centre said in a daily update on Saturday.

"Over the past day, 6,852 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in 85 regions of Russia, including 2,058, or 30 percent were asymptomatic cases", the response centre said.

Of the 6,852 newly detected cases, 750 were confirmed in Moscow, 366 in the Moscow Region, and 280 in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, according to the report.

The reported daily dynamics included 188 new fatalities, bringing the cumulative death toll to 8,969.

Total recoveries now count 393,352, an increase of 9,200 over the past day, including 1,852 in Moscow, 1,421 in the Moscow Region, and 716 in St. Petersburg.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a measure to provide $356.5 million in financial assistance to Myanmar as the country struggles to cope with economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, according to a press release on the fund's website.

"To address the urgent balance-of-payments and fiscal needs, the IMF has approved US $356.5 million emergency assistance for Myanmar under the Rapid Credit Facility and the Rapid Financing Instrument", the press release read.

The funds will go towards the economic relief plan put together by Myanmar's government to tackle the economic impact of COVID-19, including through such measures as increased health expenditures, food distribution, support to businesses and farmers, and cash transfer programmes for the most vulnerable populations.

On its end, Myanmar has committed to "put in place targeted governance, transparency, and accountability measures to ensure the appropriate use of emergency financing" and, under obligations of Article VIII of the IMF Articles of Agreement, reiterated its commitment to "maintaining an exchange system free of restrictions on payments for current international transactions".

BISHKEK (Sputnik) – The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kyrgyzstan has risen by record 309 to 4,513 over the past 24 hours, the republic's coronavirus response centre told Sputnik on Saturday.

A day earlier, Kyrgyzstan reported about 250 new confirmed coronavirus cases.

"As of 27 June 2020, 309 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been registered in the republic, including 118 in [the capital of] Bishkek", a centre spokesperson said.

The death toll from the coronavirus in the Central Asian nation stands at 46 people, while 2,212 people have been discharged from hospitals.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – India has confirmed a record 18,552 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, with the total number of those infected having surpassed 500,000, the country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.

The number of confirmed cases in India currently stands at 508,953. The death toll from the disease has reached 15,685, with 384 new fatalities recorded over the past day.

The central Indian state of Maharashtra with 152,765 confirmed cases remains the most affected region. It is followed by the national capital territory of Delhi, with 77,240 cases, and the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with 74,622 cases.

A day earlier, India registered 17,296 new coronavirus cases and 407 fatalities.

India is fourth in terms of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, following the United States, Brazil, and Russia.
