Unauthorised Prayer Gathering Expected Outside Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem - Video

But all that changed when this summer’s 50-day war between Israel and Hamas prompted jittery travelers to cancel trips en masse. Merchants in Jerusalem’s Old City say the feel the sting. The area’s cobblestone streets are typically chock full of tourists visiting the holy sites within the storied walls. But they've been eerily empty over the summer.

Last week, worshippers gathered outside Al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third-holiest site, to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan, while the interiors of the mosque remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

An unauthorised prayer gathering is expected outside Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem on 29 May amid calls for worshippers to come together and pray in protest over the delay in the reopening of the holy site.

The mosque has been closed since March amid the spread of coronavirus for the first time in more than 50 years and was initially expected to reopen its door after Eid al-Fitr - the day marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The reopening, however, was postponed until 31 May.
