Campaign groups have raised alarm after five suicides were confirmed in prisons in England and Wales over a six-day period, amid a strict lockdown that has seen family visits canceled as part of efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19, The Guardian newspaper reports on Thursday.

According to the newspaper, 16 prisoners have taken their own lives since the UK government introduced social distancing measures on 23 March, itself not a record, but concern has been raised after a rapid uptick in suicides in recent days.

“These deaths point to the frustration and despair of those faced with inhumane living conditions and highly restrictive regimes,” Deborah Coles, director of the Inquest charity, said as quoted by the newspaper.

Coles also called on the government to rapidly reduce the UK’s penal population to prevent further deaths as a result of the measures introduced to curb the spread of COVID-19.

All visits and educational activities in UK prisons were canceled from 24 March as part of emergency regulations introduced by the Ministry of Justice to prevent a widespread outbreak of the coronavirus disease. There are also strict limits on the time prisoners can spend outside of their cells.

According to figures released by the Ministry of Justice this past week, more than 440 inmates and 870 members of prison staff have tested positive for the coronavirus disease since the start of the outbreak.

Jews on Thursday, following the Israeli authorities' recent easing of the country's lockdown restrictions introduced to combat COVID-19, began to celebrate the Shavuot holiday, also knows as the Feast of Weeks, which is dedicated to the anniversary of when they believe God gave the Torah to the nation of Israel at Egypt’s Mount Sinai.

The 2020 Shavuot holiday, which means weeks in Hebrew, lasts from May 28-29 in Israel. The celebration usually occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan and may fall between May 15 and June 14, according to the Gregorian calendar. The Jewish holiday occurs seven weeks after the first day of Passover, which marks the exodus of Jews from ancient Egypt.

Shavuot is a public holiday during which all government institutions, as well as public transport, shops and markets, do not operate. To celebrate, most families in Israel are traveling away from home to the northeastern freshwater Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Kinneret, as the government has allowed visiting beaches since May 20.

The holiday also has an agricultural meaning, as in the past it also marked the time of wheat harvest.

On the eve of Shavuot, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin met farmers, who have faced financial hardships because of the COVID-19 crisis. The president expressed his gratitude to agricultural workers, praising their efforts to save the country’s provisions.

The Israeli authorities have called on citizens to celebrate Shavuot with only those people whom they live with at home. According to the holiday’s traditions, Israelis should eat dishes made primarily of dairy products.

At night during the holiday, Jews should read religious texts together in a synagogue, but under the current health circumstances, only 50 worshipers are allowed to congregate in one place.

On Wednesday, the Israeli Health Ministry and Finance Ministry said that the country had allowed bars, restaurants, pubs and swimming polls to reopen. However, citizens are still required to respect social distancing rules and wear face masks in public places.

The Israeli authorities also announced that the academic year in the country would be extended until July 13. The country's schools, which were closed for more than two months, were reopened in mid-May.

As of Thursday, Israel has confirmed over 16,000 COVID-19 cases and 281 coronavirus-related deaths.

Younger people, between the ages of 25 and 45 tend to be the majority affected by the coronavirus in Africa, but many of those who are severely ill are inn older age groups, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, said Thursday.

At the same time, according to the WHO official, people who are severely ill and who die tend to concentrate in older age groups, over 60.

Regarding comorbidity, Moeti noted that the data on non-communicable disease, like cardiovascular conditions and others, had shown that "African people, in general, tend to be affected earlier and tend to be more seriously affected and in fact tend to die earlier of these non-communicable diseases."

The United Kingdom has the highest rate of mortality from the coronavirus disease since 20 March out of 19 countries for which there is sufficient data, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Thursday, adding that the UK was second only to the United States in the number of excess deaths.

The newspaper conducted the study by analyzing data published by the national statistical bodies of 19 countries. According to the data, the UK has a higher rate of excess deaths per million people than Italy, Spain, and the United States, all of which have been considered to be epicenters of the coronavirus disease outbreak.

Death rates in other European countries, such as Italy and Spain, are unlikely to overtake the UK unless they are hit by a second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, the newspaper stated.

Only the United States, with a much larger population, has a higher number of excess deaths since 20 March, according to the newspaper.

Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, the UK Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed a total of 37,460 deaths related to the disease. According to the country’s Office of National Statistics, 42,173 people have died as a result of the disease as of 15 May.

Greek media have retracted reports about the country’s alleged plans to launch vaccination with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), primarily used against tuberculosis, in June to protect the population from novel coronavirus.

On Wednesday, Greece’s Proto Thema newspaper reported, citing Evangelos Yamarellos, a professor of pathology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, that the COVID-19 vaccination with BCG has been approved by the National Agency for Medicines and will commence on June 1.

Hours later, the newspaper replaced the material with a new one titled "Truth About TB Vaccine and Coronavirus," specifying that the Health Ministry is planning a clinical trial of BCG, not a vaccination campaign.

Other media outlets have also removed their publications about the alleged campaign.

The BCG vaccine, which was first used medically back in 1921, came under the spotlight after several scientists across the globe hinted at a possible correlation between countries that require BCG vaccines and lower COVID-19 death rates there. In mid-April, the World Health Organization said that two clinical trials of the vaccine were underway, warning against speaking about its impact on SARS-CoV-2 until the trials were completed.

Myanmar should stop imprisoning people for violating COVID-19 quarantine, curfews and other limitations imposed amid the outbreak, as this practice could only speed up the spread of the virus in crowded detention facilities amid poor hygiene conditions and inability to observe social distance, a prominent rights watchdog said in a press release on Thursday.

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), at least 500 people, including children, migrant workers, and representatives of religious minorities, were placed in custody for between one month and one year since March. Most of them were arrested under the National Disaster Management Law, Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases Law, and other penal code provisions. Cases of hundreds more people are still being investigated by the authorities or resulted in fines.

"Limiting public health risks through social distancing is crucial, but jailing people for being outside at night just adds to everybody’s risk. Throwing hundreds behind bars in crowded, unhygienic prisons defeats the purpose of containing the spread of Covid-19," Phil Robertson, the deputy Asia director at HRW, said, as quoted in the press release.

In April, Myanmar released some 25,000 prisoners under its annual Buddhist new year amnesty. However, as a result, the prison population was reduced to just above official capacity with remaining detainees still having no adequate conditions, as there are only 30 doctors and 80 nurses employed by the country's prison system.

"Myanmar did the right thing in releasing thousands of prisoners last month, but jailing regulation violators threatens to undo that progress and put more people in harm’s way. The authorities should act to prevent the spread of Covid-19, rather than using the pandemic as a pretext for violating rights," Robertson added.

In March, United Nations human rights experts warned in a joined press release that COVID-19 restrictions "should not be used as a basis to target particular groups, minorities, or individuals," noting that it was necessary to ensure that such actions were not used as a cover for repressive moves.

More than 159,000 excess deaths coinciding with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic have been reported in 24 European countries since early March, Hans Kluge, the WHO regional director for Europe, said on Thursday.

According to Kluge, more than 2 million cases of COVID-19 and 175,000 associated deaths have been confirmed across the European region as of this week.

"Perhaps a less reported, but equally alarming figure is that since early March, more than 159,000 excess deaths, coinciding with the pandemic, have been reported from 24 European countries. These are deaths above and beyond what we would have expected normally at this time of the year," the WHO official told a virtual briefing.

According to case information reported to the organization, 94 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in the region were in people aged 60 and above, and 97 percent of all deaths had at least one underlying condition, Kluge added.

"Over the past 14 days, cumulative cases in the European Region have increased 15 percent and the region still accounts for 38 percent of cases and 50 percent of deaths globally. The five European countries reporting the highest cumulative numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past 14 days are the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Belarus, and Italy," the official said.

At the same time, Spain, Italy, UK and France continue to account for 72 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in the region, Kluge noted.

The tally of coronavirus cases linked to a logistics center west of Seoul has more than doubled in the past 24 hours to 82, the Yonhap news agency reported on Thursday, citing authorities.

The first case related to a logistics center in the city of Bucheon, which is 15.5 miles west of Seoul, was detected last week. It is said to be tied to a cram school instructor in nearby Incheon, who tested positive for COVID-19 after visiting nightclubs in the capital’s neighborhood of Itaewon, which emerged as an infection cluster in early May.

On Wednesday, the number of cases tied to the logistics center stood at 36 cases.

In light of growing cluster infections, the Gyeonggi provincial government practically suspended the facility’s operations for two weeks, according to the media outlet.

Coupang, the country’s biggest e-commerce firm and the owner of the facility, meanwhile reportedly said that one more employee at its another logistics center had contracted coronavirus. This time, it happened in Goyang, north of Seoul. The facility has been closed.

The spike in cluster cases comes as the country's COVID-19 cases have jumped by 79 to 11,344 in the past 24 hours, even though the daily increase dropped below 40 back in early April, later stabilizing at about 10-20 cases. On Wednesday, the coronavirus cases, however, climbed by 40 for the first time since that.
