"We've been in discussions day-to-day with our colleagues in China about putting together the necessary scientific inquiries into the origin of the virus ... I think we will be very pleased to continue those discussions. I don't believe there's a date yet for a scientific mission, but we will be looking forward to doing that as soon as possible and with the right mix of scientific experts from multinational perspective to join such a team", Michael Ryan, the executive director of the health emergencies programme, said during a briefing.

"We are five months into this pandemic. We have five months worth of data on COVID-19. We do have some experience with SARS [Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, outbreak in China in 2002-2003], we do have some experience with MERS [Middle East respiratory syndrome], we do have some experience with other human coronaviruses, but there is nothing right now to indicate that this virus will resurge in winter months", Maria Van Kerkhove, COVID-19 technical lead at WHO, said, adding that "What we know and what we need to prepare for is that the virus can resurge if we give it an opportunity".

The WHO expert reiterated that many people remained susceptible to the virus, which meant that "the virus is there regardless of temperature, regardless of the month".

"If we think of waves, if we think of winter months, if we think of flu ... when we have co-infection, co-circulation of influenza and COVID-19, as we are seeing in the Southern Hemisphere, that could complicate our understanding. Because if we don't have testing in place we don't know what people are infected with. And so it could potentially flood the system", van Kerkhove said.

She urged all countries to "remain on high alert" in terms of their ability to test, isolate and care for COVID-19 cases.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A judge in Bolivia has placed former Health Minister Marcelo Navajas in pretrial detention for three months over the corrupt purchase of ventilators during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the newspaper La Razon reports.

Navajas was arrested this past week while still in office. After the minister was detained, interim President Jeanine Anez Chavez removed him from his post.

During a 10-hour court hearing on Sunday, Judge Hugo Huacani ordered Navajas to be incarcerated at La Paz’s San Pedro prison, the newspaper stated. Three other officials, including Fernando Valenzuela, the former legal affairs director at Bolivia’s Health Ministry, have also been placed in pretrial detention for six months.

The scandal relates to the purchase of ventilators from Spain, which, upon arrival, were found not to meet World Health Organisation standards. Later, it became known that the Bolivian government paid more than $27,000 for each of the 170 ventilators, a fee many times higher than market value.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Another worker at a mink farm in the Netherlands appears to have been infected with the new coronavirus by the furry mammal, the Dutch agriculture minister said Monday.

The first case of mink-to-human transmission was reported a week ago at one of two farms in the country's south that saw an outbreak of the infection.

"A second case of a mink passing SARS-CoV-2 (CoV-2) to a human has recently been recorded at an infected mink farm. It looks similar to the first case," Carola Schouten said in a letter to parliament.

The farms in the North Brabant province are in the country's epicenter of the outbreak.

he minister said that both infections happened before the minks were found to carry the virus. She said protective gear could help prevent further transmissions.
