FBI Rules Shooting at US Naval Station 'Terrorism-Related,' Possible Second Person of Interest
19:43 GMT 21.05.2020 (Updated: 10:14 GMT 15.11.2022) The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced that it has obtained enough information to rule that the Thursday morning shooting at Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi (NAS-CC) was terror-related.
"We have determined that the incident this morning at the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi is terrorism-related," said FBI spokesperson Leah Graves during a news conference on May 21.
Graves stated that the "subject is deceased," but the scene of the incident is "still being processed," and there may be a "potential second related person of interest" who is at-large in the local community.
Service members were ordered to shelter in place as the Texas air base was placed under lockdown around 6:15 a.m. local time on Thursday following reports of an active shooter at the facility's North Gate.
NAS-CC officials confirmed around 7:30 a.m. that the shooter had been neutralized, according to Corpus Christi outlet KIII TV.
After being assigned to investigate, the FBI reiterated confirmation that the gunman was killed, adding that security personnel eliminated the threat.
Leadership at the airbase later confirmed one sailor was transported to an area hospital after sustaining injuries from the shooting. The individual was released hours later after medical officials deemed the sailor to be in good condition.
Several shots can be overheard within brief eyewitness footage provided to the outlet.
Be advised, the footage below includes graphic content that may be offensive to some audiences.
The FBI's Houston Field Office noted via Twitter that information on the suspect will not be released at the moment "in order to protect the integrity of the investigation," which is a joint effort by the agency and local authorities.
