A video conference of G20 leaders planned for Friday was called off last minute due to ongoing disagreements between the United States and China over the World Health Organization’s (WHO) handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post newspaper reported, citing a source, on Saturday.

Earlier in April, US President Donald Trump announced the US would suspend funding for the WHO, accusing the organization of botching the outbreak response. Shortly thereafter, China said it would boost its WHO support by $30 million.

According to South China Morning Post, the G20 meeting was not publicly announced and was set to be attended by Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, but fell through because of US insistence on holding WHO accountable for supposedly mishandling the outbreak response with China categorically refusing any such propositions.

"As such, the conference was called off at the last minute," the source involved in preparing the videoconference, who asked their name not to be revealed, told the outlet.

The source added that the conference could soon be held if the two heavyweights found a compromise on the wording of a G20 communique to be shared after talks.

Saudi Arabia, which currently presides over G20, initiated the first extraordinary videoconference on tackling the coronavirus pandemic on March 26. It was attended by all heads of states and government of G20 and various other conferences involving top G20 economists and energy officials to coordinate responses to the pandemic and the economic fallout.

Nearly 60 more coronavirus cases were confirmed among the crew of the Costa Atlantica cruise ship, docked in Japan’s western Nagasaki prefecture, which brings the total number of infections on board the vessel to nearly 150, media reported Saturday.

The Italian-registered cruise liner, with 623 crew members on board without any holidaymakers, docked late last month for maintenance work at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard. By Friday, 91 crew members were confirmed positive for COVID-19 as health workers began testing the entire crew after one member was found to be infected in mid-April.

One crew member remains in serious condition in a Nagasaki hospital, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported citing officials, adding that all 623 crew members have been tested for the virus.

Russia’s embassy in Japan said that one of the infected crew members is a Russian national whose condition was stable.

Thailand's health authorities on Saturday confirmed 53 new coronavirus cases registered in the past 24 hours, taking the total number to 2,907, Taweesin Visanuyothin, a spokesman for the national coronavirus response center, said on Saturday.

"Today, 53 new cases of infection and another death from the coronavirus were recorded ... The total number of those infected since the outbreak in Thailand is now up to 2,907 people and the total number of deaths from the coronavirus infection is 51 people," the spokesman said.

According to the Thai Enquirer news outlet, citing Visanuyothin, 57 people who were discharged from hospitals in the past day brought the total number of recoveries to 2,547.

The fresh numbers show a jump in rate of infection, as only 15 new cases were detected on Friday, due to increased testing at migrant detention facilities, the spokesman explained.

"The large increase is because we have transitioned to active case findings which means we’re looking for the virus more… We have taken a look at the recent news from Singapore and seen the outbreak in an enclosed space so we are looking out for more cases," Visanuyothin said at a briefing in Bangkok, as quoted by Thai Enquirer.

Singapore initially appeared to have mitigated the coronavirus outbreak in the country, however increased testing in tightly packed dormitories housing migrant workers has seen the number of cases skyrocket over the past weeks.
