In December 2018, three tourists and one Egyptian national died after a bus carrying tourists blew up near the Giza pyramid complex.

The Al-Arabiya broadcaster reported Sunday, citing two security sources that a blast has hit a tourist bus at the Grand Egyptian Museum, not far from the Giza pyramid complex.

Media have reported that the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device that was set off while the bus was moving.

Egyptian Army Kills 16 Extremists in Sinai Anti-Terror Raid Over Past 4 Days
Cairo has been battling Islamic insurgents on the Senai Peninsula for years. Police and security forces, as well as civilians, have frequently been the target of deadly attacks staged by Islamists.

Earlier this year, the Egyptian Armed Forces and the Interior Ministry launched Comprehensive Operation — Sinai, a major anti-terrorist offensive. Since then, hundreds of militants were killed and detained.

The attack comes as the Egyptian tourism sector is recovering following years of crisis that followed the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that ended with the toppling of then-leader Hosni Mubarak.
