WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – A newly introduced bill in the US Congress would limit the export of sensitive American technologies to China, US Senator Josh Hawley said in a press release on Tuesday.

“It’s time to acknowledge that China acts more like an adversary than a friend. For too long, China has exploited American innovation to undermine our values and threaten our security. This legislation is an important step toward keeping American technology out of the hands of the Chinese government and its military”, Hawley said.

If passed, the China Technology Transfer Control Act of 2019 would place 15 core technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, semiconductors, advanced construction equipment and lithium battery manufacturing on the US Department of Commerce’s Export Control List.

The bill would also impose sanctions on foreign entities and individuals that violate these export controls and formally call out China for its intellectual property theft and unfair trade practices.

Washington and Beijing have been trying to overcome disagreements that emerged in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s decision last June to impose 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods in a bid to fix the US-Chinese trade deficit.

Since then, the sides have exchanged several rounds of trade duties. During this time, bilateral trade talks to end the dispute have been ongoing, but to no avail.
