At Least 3 Dead in Explosion at Chemical Plant in Russia's Perm Region

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - An explosion has killed at least three people leaving one person injured in an ammonia workshop belonging to the Uralchem manufacturer in Berezniki, Russia in the Perm Region, local emergency services told Sputnik Monday.

"An alert about a production incident in an ammonia facility at Uralchem's branch of Azot in the city of Berezniki has been received. Three people have been killed", a representative of the emergency services said.

The incident occurred during maintenance work, the representative added.

According to the emergency services, there is no threat to the staff or the city’s residents.

The local health department has assessed the condition of an injured employee as moderately severe.

Some thirty people and ten rescue vehicle have been involved in liquidating the aftermath of the accident.

The workshop has now returned to regular operations.The Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision has dispatched experts to assess the environment at the plant.

The Russian Investigative Committee has initiated a case into violation of safety requirements at a hazardous industrial facility.

Uralchem's press service has reported that the company has created its own internal investigation unit to establish what happened and who is responsible. 

The minister of territorial security for the Perm Region has been dispatched to the scene at the request of the region's governor.
