"Beginning October 25, 2018, imports of… seven steel products will be subject to a surtax of 25 per cent, in cases where the level of imports from trading partners exceeds historical norms," the release said. "Provisional safeguards are intended to provide Canadian steel producers and workers relief from the harm caused by excessive imports of steel products into Canada."
The Canadian International Trade Tribunal will conduct an investigation to determine if the provisional safeguards need to become permanent, the release explained.
The measures are part of the response Canada has put together to protect its steel industry since the United States imposed a 25 percent tariff on steel in March, the release said.
